Comments Thread For: Watt Strongly Fancies Ricky Burns To Defeat Beltran

Former world champion Jim Watt "strongly" fancies Ricky Burns to defend his WBO lightweight title against Raymundo Beltran at the SECC in Glasgow on Saturday night - but questioned promoter Eddie Hearn's claim that victory would make him the best Scottish boxer ever.

The Coatbridge fighter is making the fourth defence of his belt against the 32-year-old Mexican after moving up from super-featherweight, where he made three defences of his WBO crown.

Hearn concluded that Burns' title record, in addition to the quality of opponents he has fought recently, means a win would put him up "there as the greatest Scottish fighter of all time". [Click Here To Read More]

So Watt takes offence that Eddie Hearn thinks burns "the greatest ever Scottish fighter", better than the likes of Watt. But he doesn't take offence that Burns be labelled "the most successful Scottish fighter".

I'm sorry but doesn't the most successful fighter make you the greatest fighter?

Not sure what Watt is smoking.

Burns has some way to be greater than Watt and he'll never be greater than Buchanan. Burns has a good jab, Watt had a very good jab, Buchanan had one of the greatest jabs in the history of boxing.

Watt may have had some components of his game better than burns but he didn't put it all together as well, and got KTFO multiple times because of it.

3 times, all fairly early in his career, Watt was a bit of a late developer. He went 15 rounds with Arguello. I don't know what more Burns would need to do to top Watt in my eyes but I know for sure it would involve a hell of a lot more than beating Beltran.

I like Burns but he's fighting in an era of multiple belts. In 1970 Buchanan won the Ed J Neill award as fighter of the year from the Boxing Writers Association of America. You had to be elite to lift that accolade

I think you can win more titles, defend it more times, yet not be the best boxer. I think that's maybe what he was getting at.
