  • Comments Thread For: Mathebula Says Kiko Martinez Must Face Him Next

IBF junior featherweight mandatory and South African Jeffrey Mathebula has warned newly-crowned IBF champion Kiko Martinez to forget about dreaming of facing fighters such as Guillermo Rigondeaux until he has fulfilled his mandatory to him.

Martinez caused a major upset when he dethroned previously unbeaten Colombian Jhonatan Romero via a sixth round stoppage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, US a fortnight ago.

The Spaniard jumped into the title mix even though it was Mathebula who was supposed to get the title shot as he had earned the mandatory position by beating compatriot Takalani Ndlovu this past March. [Click Here To Read More]

I like Mathebula. I could see him giving Kiko some problems because he utilizes his height well.

Fight will be in S. Africa and Mathebula will keep Kiko at bay and win a wide decision. Then he will probably fight Ndlovu about four more times. Poor old Kiko always has to fight on the road, even when he wins a belt. Wonder when Frampton gets a shot?

Mathebula was like the mando right after he lost his belt to Donaire.
If they don't want it in S.A, then win the purse bid

Nothing against Mathebula - and he will beat Martinez - but his being mandatory was bull****. He "earned" it by beating Ndlovu, who had lost his previous two fights going into the "eliminator" fight. This has all the signs of the IBF circle-jerk they used to have at 130, where the same three S. African fighters swapped the title belt fight and "earned" title shots beating the same opponents.

Cassius Baloyi is the third. Two Argentine clubfighters were the stooges brought in regularly to be either eliminator opponents or "title defense"opponents. Sadly, I think this is Mathebula's promoter, so we are in for more of the same. Between them, Mathebula and Ndlovu have already fought nine IBF eliminators, all but one in S.Africa and all nine have gone the full 12
