Virgil Hill Jr. — the son and namesake of the Hall of Fame fighter — will begin his own pro boxing career this Friday in North Dakota, according to the Minot Daily News.

The younger Hill, who will soon turn 24, will apparently fight as a super middleweight. His opponent is Brent Moorehead, whose record is not listed in the article or on BoxRec.com. The bout will take place at the 4Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town.

Hill Jr. was a four-sport athlete in high school, was drafted by two different Major League Baseball teams and was released by a single-A ball club before this year’s season began, according to the newspaper. He struggled to stay above the Mendoza Line last year, batting just .204 in 46 games for the Iowa-based Quad Cities River Bandits, according to Baseball-Reference.com. If the dude's gonna try boxing out, why not try to get paid for it by fighting in a state where his father is famous? If it doesn't work out, at least he tried it while young and got some money before moving on to a new career.

I wish the guy well......his father was one of my favorites. But if he shows some signs at being decent, I hope they get him fights outside of the mid-west.

If he's considered a prospect he will get the same type of opponents that ALL prospects get. Theres no mention of an amatuer background so moving slowly as far as opponents go the first year should be understood! However at 24 yrs old he needs to get busy especially being void of amatuer experiences.
The key question for me is can he punch and is it a father & son team?

That's a common trend among many American boxers these days.

Virgil Hill was one of the truly nice guys in Boxing at the time. I'll never forget him and how humble he was. He and Tommy Hearns went fishing after they fought each other. I remember that.
