Comments Thread For: Leo Santa Cruz Will Soon Move Up To Featherweight

Newly crowned WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (25-0-1, 15KOs) is planning to move to the featherweight ranks in 2014. Santa Cruz captured the WBC crown at 122-pounds on Saturday night with a third round stoppage of Victor Terrazas. He wants to make two defenses of his title before moving up to 126-pounds.

"This was a dream of mine. I've wanted this belt since I was a little kid. I want to make two defenses of this title and then I'm going to move up," Santa Cruz said. "I don't care who I fight next. I'll fight anybody. Whatever Golden Boy and my manager Al Haymon tells me." [Click Here To Read More]

No way GBP takes that risk. Especially considering Santa Cruz is an up and coming Al "Low/Risk High Reward King" Haymon fighter.

A Rigo fight goes against everything Haymon stands for.

Santa Cruz couldn't win a round vs. Rigo if his life depended on it.

Me too. No one is going to outbox Rigondeaux. The way to beat him is to pressure him and not give him too much room to punch, which is easier said than done.

Yes Rigondeaux is a magnificent counter puncher but you can't just lay back and wait for him. You have to bring the fight to him and break him down and hit him anywhere you can. The reason Donaire lost is simply because Donaire more of a technical boxer with KO power so of course hes going to be outboxed. He's not the type to swarm like Santa Cruz and just stay at your chest.

Rigondeaux is one of the best and doing a half back step then throwing his left though.

Rigondeaux would most likely win but I think Santa Cruz has the style to make it interesting.

I think so too. He may throw a lot, but he doesn't throw carelessly. He somehow manages real accuracy with that activity. And he'll dig and dig and dig to the body. His defense isn't half as bad as most this site would say going into a fight.

Most likely, Santa Cruz isn't ready for the style, skill, and overwhelming experience Rigondeaux brings. But I want to actually see it, rather than guess at it.
