  • Comments Thread For: Frank Warren Reacts To Miguel Vazquez's Comments

IBF Lightweight Champion Miguel Vazquez is today quoted as saying that he did not take the fight against Ricky Burns in March because "his promoters made me an offer that I wasn't going to accept to travel overseas. It was said that I didn't fight because I was ill, truthfully it was a business decision."

Miguel Vazquez agreed terms for the fight against Ricky Burns and signed a bout agreement confirming all the terms, which he lodged with the IBF on 20 February 2013. We were then told by his manager Juan Carlos Torres and US representative Sean Gibbons that he was injured and unable to travel to the UK for the fight. We asked for evidence and he supplied a medical certificate, signed by his own doctor. Before the date could be rescheduled, Ricky Burns withdrew from the fight. Miguel Vazquez’ advisor was then quoted in the Daily Mail as saying "I understand Ricky Burns’ frustration that Miguel came down with a stomach virus and that the fight was pushed back, but at no point did we ever say we weren’t coming."

Does anyone even believe a medical certificate anymore? I mean they write it out for boxers like vouchers, you can get a doctors note for £20 nowadays. I never believe he was injured I just think his team didn't feel the money on offer was good enough, but they only realise that when it was too late.

So Vasquez says he pulled out because of a low offer, well why did he sign the contract in first place?

I hate to say it but with corruption being what it is in Mexico it's probably very easy to get a doctor to sign any kind of statement you want.

Exactly. I have always found it amazing how people keep championing Vazquez and making him out as the "most avoided fighter", conveniently forgetting that

            a) it was him, not Burns, who backed out of their scheduled fight.
            b) he reportedly turned down a fair offer to fight Broner.
            c) his resume is weaker than weak. Burns, who gets trashed for being a "protected paper champ", has wins over at least 3 fighters that are better than anyone Vazquez has ever beaten.

Winds me up when people call burns a paper champ...
he beat katsidis for the interim and marquez moved up to Light welter and became champ
then he beat paulus moses and then kevin mitchell, and then the guy who had no stamina but in fairness to him he was quite good and would become a very good lightweight if he improved his stamina!

I agree he is not a paper champion at 135 and has proved his worth against legit opponents, most people had the Katsidis and Mitchell fights a toss up going into it and he dominated them, he fought ex WBA champion Moses and dominated him, fought a pretty good undefeated prospect in Gonzalez and stopped him and is also fighting another top contender in Beltran in a couple of weeks time, and i think Beltran's sparring friend Manny Pacquiao has picked Beltran to beat Burns so it is no joke fight if you are getting attention off of the Pacman who is a very busy man!

It was not just the stamina, me personally i thought Gonzalez hit Burns with the kitchen sink to no effect and took a few bombs himself in that last round and got his heart broken so he quit on his stool with a fake injury, correct me if i am wrong but it got exposed that there was no injury whatsoever when he was claiming his wrist was badly broken!
