  • Comments Thread For: Frankie Gavin Going All In For David Barnes Showdown

Birmingham star Frankie Gavin will defend his British and Commonwealth Welterweight titles against David Barnes on Saturday 21st September at the Copper Box Arena in London.

Gavin (15-0, 12KO) will be featured on a multi-title extravaganza alongside British stars Billy Joe Saunders v John Ryder, plus Dereck Chisora, Paul Butler and Liam Walsh v Joe Murray, all live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/****** Ch. 546).

Undefeated Gavin aims to make the treasured Lonsdale belt his own property with a successful third defence against the Manchester southpaw who has won the British Welterweight title outright, and also won the title at light-welterweight.

The 27-year-old defeated Junior Witter to win the British title and has made two defences against Jason Welborn and Denton Vassell - winning both fights with sensational seventh round stoppages.

The win against Vassell in June was his most impressive to date when he broke Vassell’s jaw and took his Commonwealth belt and unbeaten record.

“This is a special night for me at the Copper Box Arena when my dream to own the Lonsdale belt will come true,” Said Gavin. “I’m looking forward to this fight more than any other in my career, Barnes is a tough, tough, kid, he was a British champion at two-weights and deserves respect, but there is no way he’s going to beat me on the night, no way at all." This is a terrible fight for Gavin.

I'm not saying it will be a terrible fight. Barnes was a half decent prospect himself at one stage & has some skills but he hasn't beaten a decent opponent (at just British domestic level) since Bami and that's his only decent win in a decade!

Gavin is 28 next month & should be looking at using the Vassell bout as a springboard up, not a trapdoor down.

A bout with Carson Jones would have been a great test or even Holt, Bailey or Collazo.

If they're serious about Gavins career they are going about it a funny way.

I agree, Barnes hasn't been relevant even at domestic level in a very long time. I predict a comfortable decision win for Gavin, although it probably won't be a great fight to watch since Barnes can be quite awkward and a bit of a spoiler. I saw his fight last year against Vivian Harris and it was very poor, never got going.

Agreed... I know they want the british title out right but they are kind of acting like his career is going to last for ever.

He could only have 2-3 years of his athletic prime left, its time to get a shift on!

I think Frankie has dealt with one of the trickiest spoilers in the game in Jnr Witter, why fight a lower level spoiler in Barnes? I dont see what he learns from this!? Maybe this is just to win him the Lonsdale outright. Frankie was mustard against Vassell. Carson Jones or Deano Byrnes would be a better fight? Bradley Pryce needs to pipe down calling Frankie out as well. Knock it on the head san.
