Flyweight prospect Jesus Ortega knew the score the moment his phone rang for the opportunity to face Zou Shiming, which takes place this Saturday in Macau. The fight wouldn’t at all resemble his first four fights as a pro, all of which have taken place in his home state of Sonora, Mexico.
This particular bout – which airs via same-day tape delay on HBO2 in the United States (5:30PM ET) – is intended as an opportunity to further build Shiming (1-0, 0KO) as a draw in his native China, and eventually around the world. Much like his countryman Eleazar Valenzuela was summoned in April, Ortega heads overseas knowing the intended role is that of sacrificial lamb.
It doesn’t necessarily mean he has to embrace it.
