BoxNews have reported that Worcester-born journeyman Billy Smith passed away earlier today, citing suicide as the cause of death. Billy, 13-145-2, was a regular on the domestic circuit and he was due to fight this coming weekend. However, Smith’s ring record was deceptive, he was a bag of tricks and gave lots of prospects a hard night’s work. A general rule of thumb was that if you could land clean shots on Billy — and this also applied to his late twin brother Ernie (who took his own life in January 2010) — then you were a fine prospect.

What??? People like him are the lifeblood of the real sport. Who do you think starts the careers of young prospects off.

If you are a boxing fan, a true boxing fan, you'll appreciate people like him.

I think it all depends on how he lost those 145 fights. If he was semi-competitive and love the sport of boxing, then why not. I just hope his suicide wasn't due to him losing so many fights.

On another note, seeing that his brother also took his life, it reminds me of an old co-worker who took his life a few years ago. I think back when I first met him at work and he used to play on a Flag Football team every year (I'm assuming to stay in shape, but not get hurt). He would wear the jesray to work and on the back of his jersey, his football name was "suicide". Not knowing him that well at the time, I thought that was a cool football name. It was a couple years later I found out that several of his siblings, and maybe some other relatives had in fact commited suicide. I'm not sure if he was on any medications as he appeared normal to me and appeared to love life. He had a couple kids that I knew of, he was married, but I believe they had separated, but I guess when life gets too stressful for people, thats their only way out. I advise anyone, including myself, when things get bad, there's always tomorrow. You can be in the process of losing your house, cars and money, then tomorrow you can wake up a rich or receive a call for a job you applied for 6 months ago and forgot all about it.

The Billy Smiths of this world are the true boxing heroes.

Without people like him & their multiple losses there wouldn't be the stars for the glory hunters to worship.

People must know that there are fighters whose purpose is strictly to see what a young prospect got. The journeymen of the world are greatly needed in this sport. I just wish our stars of the sport fought at least half the amount of fights that he has. The earlier they receive stardom, the less they fight. I want to see some of our best fighters fight 70 to 80 fights, with more than half being against quality opponents. If it wasn't for these television contracts, promoter feuds and different boxing organizations not wanting their fighter to hold more than one belt or wanting them to fight their #1 contender instead of what the public wants, boxing would be a heck of a lot better.
