Comments Thread For: Gomez Says Canelo is Facing Floyd Mayweather Too Soon

Mexican promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing recently discussed the fall clash between Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26KOs) and WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). The big fight is going to happen on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Gomez says Canelo, 22-years-old, is facing Mayweather too soon, but also calls it the opportunity of a lifetime. [Click Here To Read More]

a couple years from now floyd might be ripe for the picking. but canelo doesn't have a couple years from now. dude might end up a middle after a few more fights at jr middle. and who knows what would happen then.

in other words: canelo should've waited for floyd to lose a step before taking this fight...

Very true. We all know how fleeting big opportunities inside the boxing business can be. In Canelo's case, the reward in this fight is worth the risk. Isn't that what boxing champions are supposed to do...fight the best out there?

It would either be viewed as too early for Canelo now or too late for Floyd if the fight came later. I think this is great timing. Canelo is coming off of his best win and he's still able to fight at JMW. In a year or two, he will be a MW most likely. It's a win-win situation for Canelo.
