Comments Thread For: Garcia Defends “0” If Not Title, Blasts Shot JuanMa

by Cliff Rold - One day after losing his WBO Featherweight belt on the scales after missing weight by two pounds, 25-year old Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO) of Oxnard, California, laid four rounds of beating on 29-year old former 122 and 126 lb. titlist Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO) of Caguas, Puerto Rico, for what turned out to be an easy win on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The referee was Rafael Ramos.

The drama of the fight came before the opening bell at Friday’s weigh-in. Lopez, who had moved to 130 lbs. before agreeing to drop back down for this title opportunity, made weight at 125 ¼ while Garcia came in at 128. A cash settlement reported in the six figures allowed the fight to go on with the title on the line only for Lopez.

    The title remains vacant.

The first was largely a feeling out round, Garcia’s best work coming off his stiff left jab. Lopez, a southpaw, landed a couple of straight lefts to lay out his intentions. A minute into the second, Lopez was tagged with a hard left hook and then right hand, his legs saying he’d felt the punches. After taking a jab down the middle, Lopez mugged at Garcia but had no leather to show for it. With just less than a minute left in the first, a right hand put Lopez down on the seat of his trunks. Mikey is too good... Sucks that he didn't make weight.... Wasn't it weird how he said he was sick and hiw it happens to other fighters.... And immediately hbo shows 2 days with Golovkin and the whole episode is about GGG being sick right before the fight?

This is not surprising. Juanma has always had terrible defense, since I first saw him fight Penalosa I always knew he his career wouldn't last. Only a blind rican would say otherwise and I'm rican. Juanma is time to hang em up do it for your family and your health. Too young to take that kind of punishment he make Cotto's defense look like mayweather.

I told you guys when you see the media the opposite side trainer, and fighter trying to sell their own opponent as competent thats a clear indication he is obviously not.

Garcia is simply a terrific fighter in all respects -- needs to start taking on the big names in the higher division.

Yes it was a weird coincidence but GGG was walking at his fighting weight so the flu didnt affect him much, whereas mikey cuts like 15 pounds and getting sick will def mess up a fighter who cuts that much weight

Yeah I tripped on that too but this is a testament to their great conditioning and will power. Juanma is officially on my BUM BUM list! He showed no improvement from the Salido fights. No head movement, chin straight up in the air, flat footed and stumbling all over the place every time he threw a punch. He is definitely a shot fighter.
