Comments Thread For: Sulaiman is Relieved That Margarito Will Not Return

World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman is very relieved that former champion Antonio Margarito is not coming out of retirement. Last week rumors were circulating that Margarito (38-8, 27KOs) was planning a comeback. A day or two later, Margarito released a statement which denied the comeback rumors. The Mexican boxer, 35-years-old, took a lot of punishement in his last two fights, against Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, and hasn't fought since December 2011.

Ok. So I was at the hearing where Margarito/Capetillo had their licenses revoked. I got to see and touch the hand wrap insert as well as get a demonstration of how the hands were wrapped and the insert placed inside. There used to be a report on Maxboxing by me on the hearing but we changed servers and the story has been lost. I have since found it in my emails so if you want it PM me.

The handwraps were basically made to hide the inserts. The insert was about the size of a long business card. And about as stiff. It was not the rock or steel people make it out to be. It looked like a dirty, folded or ironed piece of old gauze. The knuckle pad was wrapped around it so unless you really got in there to inspect it, you wouldn't see it.

Boxing Illustrated conducted an experiment to test whether it was possible to use plaster of paris successfully under fighting conditions. The results were reported in the May 1964 issue of BI, pp 20-24, 66. Hugh Benbow and Perry Payne (manager and trainer of Cleveland Williams) used plaster of paris on Cleveland's hands and reenacted what Kearns said occurred in Dempsey's dressing room. After 35 minutes of toasting to reenact the 114-degree heat of Toledo that day, Cleveland Williams hit the heavy bag five times. Benbow examined the wraps and found that the plaster had cracked and crumbled. "This stuff." said Cleve, "wouldn't do anybody any good."

The Boxing Illustrated test proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the plaster of paris would not have held up after the first punch, it would have crumbled and left chunks in his mitts and every punch thereafter would have been quite painful and there is little doubt he would have broken his hands. The inventor of the product issued a statement as to the impossibility of using plaster of paris without breaking all the bones in the hands.

'Laced'? What do you mean by laced? Capetillo put a strip of old gauze over his knuckles. They weren't 'laced' with anything.

his handlers were partly to be blamed on his injury...they would have stopped the fight in round ten (pac vs. cheato fight)...pac was so compassionate to cheato in that fight but his handlers were looking for a miracle...

Boxing is one of the hardest ways to make a living. I hate that he threatened lives with that plaster in his wraps and I hate that he and so many others were beaten so badly on their out. The man is 35. That's young as hell.
