Comments Thread For: Roy Jones: Guerrero Needs To Make it Ugly To Beat Floyd

Former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. spoke to BoxingScene.com and broke down Saturday's welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) and Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs). Guerrero has to make it dirty, says Roy, and he needs to attack often - but he can't get too overconfident based on his success with Andre Berto, who tried to fight Guerrero in a Mayweather-like style. Berto was dropped twice and had both of his eyes practically swollen shut, as Guerrero picked up a twelve round unanimous decision win.

Well said by Roy the problem is I think Guerrero really thinks beating Berto is gonna be the same as fighting Floyd

I think that this is the usual approach, but why not try to make Floyd fight a way he never does? Usually, applying too much "pressure" plays right into his hands.

I don't get why everyone keeps saying guerrero is small... he looked bigger than cotto did against mayweather in the yesterdays episode of all access.

To me the key has always been the jab. If you can establish a good strong jab against Floyd it takes away a lot of his counter punching ability. DLH and Cotto both showed us that.

Phenomenal comment. Some people dont even pay attention to whats going on. Anyone who knows boxing, knows that everyone does not have the same body type. A guy can come up in weight, and his body may be humongous. I learned this when Ortiz fought Berto. I thought he would be too small, dude was huge. People just think that because Ghost came up, and used to be skinny, that he's just a small ww. Dude is actually bigger than Ortiz. Weight, and size is not the same thing. Ortiz is short, buff, and stocky, and weighs about 164lbs. Ghost is bigger, taller, thicker bones, wider back, bigger head than Ortiz, and he weighs about 150lbs. But he looks like he weighs 170lbs.

I think Cotto is probably bigger width wise. Guerrero is def not a small ww but I fight 165lbs and standing next to Cotto it was crazy how wide the dude was and at the time he was fighting 147lbs

I've always thought the key to beating Floyd is to use the jab and make him be the aggressor early. Make him come to you and open up when he opens up. By the 5th round, you have to change the fight plan. Now become the aggressor and make the fight ugly. Change the pace of the fight. Floyd has 36 year old legs, so make him use them. By the 10th round, switch up again. Use the jab and make him come to you. If the fight is close, he will be forced to take chances he normally wouldn't take. With Robert's skill level, he could counter Floyd's counter and maybe catch him with something big. If the fight is close by the 12th round, try to out hussle him to steal the round and maybe the fight. It takes major focus and discipline to pull it off and I don't know if Robert has all the tools to do it. But, that would be my fight plan for him to execute.
