Schaefer on Khan after he beats diaz n Garcia "Mayweather or Alexander gight next"

Amir Khan is only three victories away from a superfight with Floyd Mayweather Jnr if he can prove against Julio Diaz in Sheffield that his defensive skills have improved under new trainer Virgil Hunter.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions said on Friday: “Is this the fight which could propel Amir Khan back on the path to Floyd Mayweather ? Yes, absolutely.”

Yet the 10 million dollar question hanging over Khan’s head remains: we know he is offensively brilliant, but can he fix his defensive fallibilities, exposed in his fights against Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson and to some extent Marcos Maidana, the latter against whom he had a torrid contest but went on to defeat.

Telegraph Sport can reveal that Khan’s promoters’ Golden Boy, owned by multiple former world champion Oscar De La Hoya, have been in negotiatons for the Boltonian to face the unbeaten American Mayweather, the sport’s No 1 pound for pound boxer, potentially next year.

“Ideally, Amir will box sensationally on Saturday night, get married, go on his honeymoon and then Ramadan, and come back in December and fight the winner of the four-man tournament between Danny Garcia, Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson and Lucas Mathysse,” explained Schaefer.

“That’s why I’m in Sheffield and not New York this weekend at Judah versus Garcia.”

“That’s the plan. It will be up to Amir to deliver in the December fight, then he could either go up to welterweight for a potential Mayweather fight immediately, or fight, say, Devon Alexander for the 147lb belt and then go into a unification fight against Mayweather. He also has the option clean up the 140lb division first.”

Khan revealed yesterday, however, that he aims to set the record straight against either Garcia or Peterson, against whom he lost in his 27-3 career.

Under the guidance of Hunter, one of the sport’s most intuitive teachers, the 25-year-old must prove his footwork and defensive nous have being sharpened in the heat of the battle. Khan's instinct has always been to fight fire with fire, but that needs to be tempered.

“I’ve always been a quick learner, but the old mistakes were always there. Believe me, I’ll cause fireworks against Diaz. Virgil has shown me so much already.”

Khan believes his second camp under Hunter has been instructional.

“Virgil will shout at you. He’s making sure I’m not standing there taking shots, like I did in the Wild Card Gym. I never got stopped in the Wild Card by Freddie Roach or any other trainer.

"Virgil calls me back to the corner and tells me off. ‘That’s not your style, move, use your feet,’ he tells me. He makes me think. I need to be told that. You’ll see a different fighter, some of my old self has gone.”

The acid test comes tonight, against former two-time world lightweight champion Diaz, who looks in superb shape. “I know I have a warrior in front of me, but I know I have to break his heart, and then hurt him,”said Diaz, with a 40-7-1 record. “The fight will not go 12 rounds. I’m aiming to knock Amir Khan out.”

Not being caught in a war is the key to this fight for Khan. “Amir is a promoter’s dream. He’s extremely skilled, has a very fan-friendly style, crossover appeal.

"He just needs to use his defensive skills better. We will see if in the second fight with Virgil if he has learned something," said Schaefer. “We still believe that within 18 to 24 months, Amir Khan will go on to become the No 1 pound for pound fighter on the planet.”

As you can see from the bolded, schaefer also believs khan is a p4 p destined fighter, great minds think alike. Personally i think khan should just take care of these clowns from philly and then go straight into the mayweather fight before he retires in fear.

If Khan were to beat Danny Garcia and than Devon Alexander at 147....why not??? Will this happen....probably not. A lot of if's there.

Last time Khan was in line he got beaten by Peterson and Garcia both. It will take avenging the Garcia loss and a solid win against someone like Devon at 147 to get that fight.

If Khan is going to fight Floyd, he better go right to him if he beats Diaz. Because if he fights Swift again, the same thing will happen.

Beating diaz iis a solid win at WW bro, diaz is 3-0 at ww and a win over him should understandably make khan mayweathers mandatory, only a hater or racist will disagree.

If anyone is P4P destined, it's definitely Khan.

-Undefeated with possibly the greatest trainer of all time
          -Brand new elite level neck
-Getting some of the best sparring out there (hence the black eye in recent pics)
-Top tier strength and conditioning from one of the best out there

Not to mention, he'll easily storm through that cheater Peterson and Garcia in a rematch imo.

Beating Diaz isn't getting Khan a Mayweather fight, you're seriously delusional. Mayweather, if he fights again this year, would fight either Garcia, Peterson/Lucas, or even Devon before Khan who's lost his last two important fights.

If Khan were to beat Garcia or the Peterson/Lucas winner, than go to 147 and beat Alexander, why not??? He'd be about as deserving as anyone else from 140-147 then. Will that happen....probably not.

Eh...? Unless Garcia vacates he got an appointment with his mandatory Mr. Hammer Fists aka Lucas Matthysse first. That means Khan has to get past Matthysse not Garcia... which won't happen.
