ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Today at a Fresquez Productions media luncheon, 14-time, three-division world boxing champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs) shocked the combat sports world by announcing her retirement from boxing, effective after her May 11 fight with "Merciless" Mary McGee (20-1, 11 KOs), in order to pursue her mixed-martial-arts career (3-0-0).

I guess she can find better fights in MMA than boxing.

This is awesome! She trains at Greg Jacksons gym which means she also has a good ground game and she will compete at 135 pounds which is the same division that Ronda Rousey is in. I hope she makes it to the UFC I think she could really do some damage.

She should have fought Braekhus first then moved on to MMA.

I'm very saddened to find out about this.

There's no question that Holm should do what her heart tells her. But to the extent that finances played a role in her decision, I am very sad for the sport that we love.

What does it say about our sport, and about us fans, when women's MMA, a relative newcomer, can pay her more than much-older-and-more-established women's boxing does? After all, the same sentiment that many people have against women in boxing surely also exists against women in mixed martial arts.

Why hasn't there been more support from boxing promoters, broadcasters, and fans?

              Truly, truly disheartening.

Did Holm also train in other martial arts, while being a full-time boxer? My speculation is that it's hard to reach one's full potential in a specialized sport like boxing if one has to share focus and time with other sports. Having trained in a non-boxing-exclusive gym doesn't necessarily mean that she also trained in more than boxing, after all.

Also, the article indicated that she's fought in the 140-154 lb. classes. Moving down to 135 seems difficult, at this point.

I understand that Ronda Rousey is an accomplished judo practitioner; she has taken full advantage of the skill discrepancy between her and her opponents. If Rousey and Holm do fight each other, I hope it's not seen as a boxing-versus-judo freak show, like when James Toney made boxers everywhere look incompetent when he tried to fight an experienced wrestler/mixed martial artist.

Lastly: If Holm were to "do damage," she can do it anywhere. I don't see how the UFC at this point can claim to have the best collection of women fighters, like they do with the men. In fact, her best chance of "doing damage" will be against other "strikers", and the acknowledged best women's "striker" isn't even in the UFC.

Braekhus is the reason she's going into MMA.
