Comments Thread For: Joe Gumina Will Look To Show Off His Heavy Hands

San Bruno, Calif. native Joe Gumina (4-1, 2 KO), whose devastating power punches and ring bravado mask one of the nicest personalities in the sport, recently spoke with BoxingScene about his upcoming bout.

“Hey, I’m so sorry; could you hold on for a second?”

A chorus of spirited ‘woofs’ color the background as Joe “The Punisher” Gumina reins in his 115 lb American Bulldog, Rocky, during an evening walk—his “third workout of the day,” Gumina says with a laugh.

March 8th heralds the return of boxing to the San Francisco Peninsula following a 20-year hiatus. Not since 1994, when Eddie Croft squared off against Richard Duran at the San Mateo Expo Center, has the sunny stretch of land south of the city proper seen its fair share of in-ring action. This guy comes around to my gym, hard worker too. When I first started boxing he let me attempt tee off on him before. Keep on punishing Joe.

I fought this guy in the desert showdown finals in indio california a few years back. Tough guy just not very skillful but he comes for it. When i fought him everybody was scared of the dude. Im a natural mw and hes a pretty solid lhw but i shook dude up. I gave him 2 standing 8 counts (he gave me 1) and if it was a pro fight im pretty confident i wouldve put him away. In the 3rd they took a point from me, they said i was leading with my head which was bs i was just fighting on the inside trying to keep my head on his chest but hey thats amatuer boxing for you. So i lost the decision and me and everybody else in the place felt i was robbed. Oh and my friend has it on video. Tough guy but if you can box and have some pop you can run him in to some nice shots. Id love to fight the guy again but hes at cruiser now (180+) and im back at mw (160)
