Question about boxing gloves in the Rocky movies

most movie gloves look large to me, like 16 ounce or around there.

In Rocky III, Lang's gloves were tiny compared to Balboa's. I don't know much about boxing equipment but Lang's look like what, 8 oz.?

if you are going to make a movie on human being, the least u can do is keep it real. The fight scenes were very inaccurate too, i havent read about the criticism but now i will.
THe gloves really ticked me off though, the punches looked really sloppy becuz of those ugly gloves. Smaller gloves would have improved the fight scenes alot.

The critical comments that I read mostly came from the boxing world, as I recall. I am guessing that those in the entertainment industry viewed the gloves and other instances of over-emphasis as exercises in poetic license.

The late, venerated film mogul, Cecil B. DeMille, famous for his biblical sagas on film, was also notorious for often jazzing up episodes in the bible.

And if you look at the works of El Greco and Titian...

There is a tendency in art to make things look more than they really are/were.
But, I share your view that the more faithful the depiction, the better. It would be honest.

I could be wrong but I believe that weight divisions welter and below use 8oz while 154 and up use 10oz. Someone else may be better qualified to answer this.

If this has reference to my earlier post about the Casanova gloves dispute in Tokyo in '72, Ali and Foster eventually used Sayers 8- ounce gloves.

In the course of the arguments, as I can recall, someone brought in a scale and weighed the Casanovas. They were way below the agreed upon 8 ounces (6.5). Dundee tried to put them on, claiming Ali and he had just about the same size of hands. He struggled to make the Cassanovas fit. The OJ Simpson trial and the gloves ("If they don't fit, you must acquit!") was of course, pretty much later, but...

Angelo also figured in another story involving gloves (though, I am not sure that the story is true). It is said that once, Dundee peeked through the slightly open door of the dressing room of his boy's opponent and saw that the adversary was not properly warming up. He quickly dashed back to his own dressing room and had the gloves of his boy changed from Everlast to Reyes. The reported result: his boy won by 1st round KO.

The question that could be raised on the story is, "How was it that Dundee was allowed to just change his boy's gloves without obviously informing officials and the adversary's camp? Wasn't there a prior agreement, as there should have been?"

Oh, well, boxing is full of tales, some tall.

More on gloves: as late as the 70's 5-ounce gloves were not unheard of in the Bantamweight- Flyweight classses. 6 was fairly common. There were even 4-ounce gloves.

i read somewhere that welter and up can choose 10oz and hvwts can use 12oz.

Article 20 of the WBA Safety Code adopted in 1984 specifies 8- ounce gloves for welterweight-down and 10-ounce gloves for Jr. Middle- up.

WBC's WC-14 of its Championship Rules says the same thing.

Dunno about the IBF and WBO.

If you look at the Apollo Creed/Ivan Drago fight it looks like Drago is wearing bag gloves i'm pretty sure.

i remember noticing that last time I watched it....about 2 weeks ago.

I just got them tonight and these things are sweet. I can't wait to try these out on the mitts.

I would think the reason for them being illegal in the US is due to them having unattached thumbs. They don't seem much smaller than my brother's 14 oz Reyes gloves.
