Neither was Leonard..... He not only came back and won a major title he came back at a higher weight to do it.... Before Duran the feat he accomplished had been accomplished already.... How many can say they did what Leonard did before or after (come back at a higher weight after retirement to win a title)???
Nor was Duran. He was moving up in weight, had been to war time after time with many good to great fighters, was already a 74 fight veteran, if I recall correctly.

The Leonard he beat, Leonard overall in fact, is considerably better than Hagler. No-one has, and I doubt anyone ever will, move up in weight and beat a fighter as great as Leonard in their prime whilst past their own prime.

I'm not saying the Hagler win isn't impressive. But off the top of my head, only Ali-Foreman is in the conversation for being a better win than Leonard-Duran I.

Duran was an active fighter.... Leonard wasn't..... Leonard came out of retirement moved up in weight and won a championship.... Something that hadn't been done before him and off the top of my head I don't think has happened since

Respectfully dude, those are some specific criteria.

As far as I'm aware that is the first and only time it ever happened, but I KNOW George Foreman is the only one to come off a 10 year retirement and become champion again. Does that mean it's a better win than Frazier-Ali I, which has been replicated time and time again?

I don't think so. Do you?

What worries me slightly about Hearns and SRl and Duran is that when they were slightly past it, they were being beaten by nobodies. Well maybe not exactly nobodies but surely if they were that good, being slightly past your best, you should still be beating the barkleys, Norris and Camachos and Laings of this world.

Pac is past his best now as well, yet is schooling guys like Bradley, whereas Bradley probably would have beat past his best Duran and SRL.

That was for arguments sake. One was precedented, the other was unprecedented.

But the precedented one is still the greater win, regardless of whether it has happened before.

A former Super Bantamweight going the distance with Marvin Hagler in his 8th weight division, and managing to give him all he could handle and then some without even tasting the canvas in the process (Duran was the only man of Hagler's 12 title defenses that didn't end up doing so) was much more impressive than Davey Moore.

So were beating the piss out of a prime Ray Leonard and Iran Barkley.
