Comments Thread For: Sanchez To Wear Legendary Uncle's Trunks For Velez

NEW YORK — Salvador Sanchez II will wear the trunks and robe Saturday night at Madison Square Garden that his legendary uncle wore during his final fight at the Garden 30 years ago.

Salvador Sanchez, widely viewed as one of the most promising boxers in the history of the sport at the time of his tragic death, stopped future star Azumah Nelson in the 15th round of his last fight on July 21, 1982 at the Garden. Sanchez, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991, died in a car accident Aug. 12, 1982, in Mexico. He was 23.

For Cotto to be using Chava Sanchez' name as a tool to promote his guy Velez is very disrespectful and shows what kind of future, or lack of future Cotto has in the promotional business.

He's disrespecting his uncle's name. Unless he was a great fighter (which he isn't) then he shouldn't wear the trunks of one of the best fighters in history.

Are you serious right now with this post? First of all, Sanchez wasn't the original opponent (if Im not mistaken) so if that was Cotto's intentions he would've used Sanchez from the get-go and not as a replacement. Plus even if Im wrong, what's so wrong about that? That's what a promoter does, he finds ways to promote events.

He's family dude. There's nothing wrong with that either. They were family and he's fighting in the same venue where he's uncle fought and won a very hard battle. It'll probably be the first and last time he fights in the Garden too so why not make the best of it? What if Sanchez was to win tonight, you know how much better it would make it?

What jsfd said. I don't see any disrespect. He's wearing the trunks out of respect for his uncle, to pay tribute, no matter how good of a fighter he himself is. He's only keeping his uncle's legacy alive by doing it. If he doesn't do it, who will?

Jayson Velez should retire if he loses to this wannabe.

Velez is not that good either. He lost decisively to ancient Jose Beranza two fights back.
