NEW YORK — Salvador Sanchez II will wear the trunks and robe Saturday night at Madison Square Garden that his legendary uncle wore during his final fight at the Garden 30 years ago.
Salvador Sanchez, widely viewed as one of the most promising boxers in the history of the sport at the time of his tragic death, stopped future star Azumah Nelson in the 15th round of his last fight on July 21, 1982 at the Garden. Sanchez, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991, died in a car accident Aug. 12, 1982, in Mexico. He was 23.
