Comments Thread For: Andre Ward on Kelly Pavlik Fight, Sharing Virgil Hunter

It’s not a done deal, but talks between the camps of Andre Ward and Kelly Pavlik for a Jan. 26 bout on HBO have sizzled to the point that the super middleweight champion went on the record with his take on the potential matchup.

“I feel good,” Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) said in an interview with this writer for BoxingScene.com/CSNBayArea.com. “It’s another opportunity for me to get on HBO, get on a world-class stage, and just perform.”

Pavlik (40-2, 34 KOs), the former undisputed middleweight champion from Youngstown, Ohio, has battled alcoholism and inactivity following his title loss to Sergio Martinez in 2010 to post four straight victories over the past year and a half.

      I don't think Hunter/Angulo will work out.

I hope Ward and Hunter's relationship doesn't strain over Hunter working with so many other fighters.

Ward is the main guy and helped bring him the success he has now. Down the road, if another fighter comes that's better than Ward, I hope Hunter doesn't forget this.

We saw what happened with Rashad, Jackson and Jones.

I'll never be a cheerleader for Ward but I always appreciate his class. Having said that Pavlik would have an easier time downing a case and trying to find Waldo in a book than finding Ward in the ring.

Hunter has done some good stuff with Mayfield, turning him into more of a scientific brawler. It reminds me a little of how Maidana looked in the Soto-Karass fight after training with Robert Garcia.

Virgil might be able to do the same with Angulo. But we will have to wait and see.

such a stylistically bad fight for Kelly...Ward is just on a whole other level now. Try for Froch instead

I wont knock Ward's pick of Pavlik because he took on a big threat imo in Dawson. Since no one has really distinguished themselves as a #2 in the division yet (Froch maybe), Pavlik gives a name value opponent to add to his already growing resume. Pavlik doesn't have the skills or boxing ability to beat Ward, but he does have a name and a former legacy both of which make him a viable opponent. Low risk and high reward type of fight.

Froch should be building confidence, going after guys like Brian Magee or Arthur Abraham, Ward is about six levels above that, he has no chance whatsoever.
