Mexico's Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has asked Golden Boy Promotions for a fight with Argentine boxer Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez. Canelo, the WBC's champion at junior middleweight, set the date of May 4 for his next fight. Martinez has the WBC's title at 160-pounds, but doesn't have a problem with moving down in weight.

There are three fighters on Canelo's list, with the two others being Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Canelo says that he asked Golden Boy's President, Oscar De La Hoya, to speak with Lou DiBella, the promoter of Martinez.

Remember when team Canelo approached Kirkland when he was injured? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Talking about a Martinez fight now that he's gonna have surgery? Then whenever Martinez isn't ready by that date his fans will be like "Oh well, at least he tried. It's ok if he fights another JWW."

Would love to see that fight, think it would be more competitive than people think. Canelo should get major props if he's serious about this, but it'll probably be the usual haters in here bashing him.
