Interesting so far. But i have to say that listening through 3 national anthems is asking a bit too much. First was the Irish "The Soldier's Song" sung by a decidedly unsoldierly uncertain tenor called Billy Gilbert. He certainly was overcome by the occasion and stopped twice, to go back and redo the few bars. AND, as usual with unaccompanied singers he went sharp quite a bit. He was built more like Billy Bunter, dressed in a dark T-shirt and scruffy looking baggy-kneed jeans. A disgrace actually. Maybe he was dragged out of the audience, or maybe a pub, can't account for it otherwise.
Then the Mexican anthem, a woman with beautiful hair, something like Katy Jurado's. Also a bit sharp...and flat, not too much, but...too much. nice voice.
Then the American anthem sung by the mayor of El Paso accompanying himself with a few chords every so often on a flat-top guitar. He was the only one who dsang in true pitch. A little earlier he'd given the keys to the city to Bob Arum.
So i suggest that whilst everybody is kicking up a legitimate fuss about the low quality of judges, they should also petition against unaccompanied solo singers.
