  • Throughout History who could have beat a prime Sugar Ray Robinson at 147/ catchweight

1)Henry Armstrong....when they fought he wasnt in the form he was from the mid 30s-1940. He had the style, chin, strength, and activity to outwork and outmuscle Robinson. Who could fight good on the inside but could be hit there more often than on the outside and would need more room to let off effective shots

    2) Kid Gavilan-I dont think Gavilan was at his peak 1951 til 1954 and hadnt filled out at the weight having started as a bantamweight. His activity slickness and style would Trouble Robinson.

3)Charley Burley-from what I have seen of him and his resume he was a great contender 147-175 and beat alot of great fighters was #! contender at 147 and 160 and never got a shot at a title. He was one of the most elusive well schooled guys Ive watched and also had a great punch.

4)Ray Leonard- Leonard was a great all arounder like Robinson but was a little more slicker with less power....He'd have a shot if he tried to outbox Robinson who was always used to having an edge in power and movement while mixing it up at times to gain his respect

5)Tommy Hearns-would be a tall task for anyone at 147. the Power, speed, and the jab....I could see SRR maybe stopping him but Hearns could just as well hurt or ko Robinson. Hearns had a punchers chance and if he chose to box he'd have a chance to win. Lets not forget although fast with a good jab and speed, Robinson was no Ray Leonard or Willie Pep on defense and often got tagged by smaller slower fighters

        How about Griffith?

I'd give him a shot to beat him in a series of 3.

I like Hearns vs any welter in history. I know he wont always win but the would be winner will put on the best performance of their lives to win it.

Griffith kind of inconsistent at the top level....depends on the version that shows up but he had a shot considering his strength, activity, chin, and overall skills.

As a kid saw some old film reels my uncles and Granddad had of Burley, read a lot about him and actually found some highlights and stuff on the internet. Dude was really skilled and his resume dont lie.

How about Benitez or how ever it's spelled.

              Or what about Sam Langford

Really? Which fights did you see?

As far as I'm aware the only known footage that exists of Burley highlights of his fight with Oakland Billy Smith.

And I agree, Burley was a great fighter and Robinson certainly did his best to avoid him.

Langforde had a shot was a little short but If dude was knocking out Heavyweights and world champions from lightweight to lightheavy I give him a shot. There isnt a gang of film on him but you can tell he was special....actually looks like a modern day fighter. Robinson would outspeed him but Langforde had the power and strength on his side

Benitez well I think he'd pose some problems but I just dont think he was strong enough or hit hard enough to get over the hump. Robinson had all the other advantages outside of defense and elusiveness
