Ward deserves no criticism at all for the Dawson fight being at 168. That was ******ity on Dawson's part. What is Ward supposed to do, rectify Dawson's error for him? Who knows, maybe Chad is right and can make 168 healthy. But in boxing, you take every advantage you can get (legally). All this BS about Floyd being man enough to fight Cotto at his true weight.......please. He was happy to make JMM come to 142 and then not even make the weight himself.
The criticism for Pacquaio catchweights fights has always been OTT. I mean, someone of them weren't even CWs.
Oscar - That fight had to be at 147 due to the absurdity of a fight at 154 at the time. That would have meant Manny practically moving up 4 weight classes (he had only fought at 135 once) when even WW seemed a joke. If Oscar could have made that fight at 154 without here being an outcry, he would.
Hatton - I remember the Mayweathers running with this theory that Hatton had a hydration clause. What's funny is that if there was one, Ricky would have announced it within seconds of the loss. He was never one to hold back on excuses. This rumour was never substantiated but for a long time, people would bring this up.
What's interesting about the Cotto and JMM catchweights in this; people get pissed off that Manny didn't fight Miguel at 147 - and get pissed off he didn't fight JMM at 140.
So basically, they wanted Manny to fight Miguel at a weight suited to Miguel, and JMM at a weight suited to JMM. He's supposed to go up for Miguel and come down for JMM.
Do people not understand that the cash cow in this situation is not going to give the advantage of his status away? He's supposed to diminish his own advantages to suit the other guy in both scenarios?
FWIW, I always thought it was ****** on Freddie's part to insist on the Cotto CW. I understand they were still insecure about Pac being a true WW, and they wanted to take an advantage over Miguel, but I don't think it played a material difference in the fight - and just diminishes the achievement of a really great win.
