In the article it talks how Oscar is planning to going back down to WW. That was 3 years before Pac.

When Oscar was negotiating for a rematch with Floyd...The rematch was going to take place at 147 NOT at JMW. That was before Pac came into the picture...Not until Floyd walked away from negotiations and retired did Pac come into the picture in a weight-class that Oscar had been talked about for years and recently negotiated to fight in.

And, it still didn't stop people Pac haters/naysayers from criticizing one of the greatest night in boxing history.
At the time, the PUBLIC's PERCEPTION would be inclined to think that it was a great night in boxing history because of the "underdog" emphasis,etc... in reality, was it really a huge achievement? Not really. I think a lot of fighters could have trumped Oscar that night.

    • The thing is, Dawson-Ward is a fight where a catchweight makes so much sense. More sense than Dawson trying to make 168.

At the time, right now, in 50 years from now...That was one of the greatest night in boxing history.

The problem is that Pac is trying to live off from that night...And, that's not gonna fly.

It also hasn't stopped them from pretending that Pacquiao somehow had the leverage to make Oscar freaking De La Hoya weight drain himself and not rehydrate.

            • i really dont see the comparisons. first of all i didnt have a problem with the cotto fight, with that said, it was pac and roach's insistence that the fight not be at 147. cotto just accomodated them. this is not at all the case here. dawson suggested which weight the fight should be at not vice versa. finally, if u wanna talk about a bad catchweight fight, how about we talk about that margarito/pac fight? tell us how that fight is at all similar to this one.

did it ever cross your mind, that, I dono, maybe, just MAYBE, pac shoulda just fought him at 147? people are complaining that a 145 catchweight was ridiculous (which it was), and your argument is "should pac have made cotto come down to 140, would that have been better?" even you cannot fail to see how idiotic this sounds. you dont even mention 147. why?
He does make a good point. did it ever cross your mind Ward should be moving up? its basically the same thing.

this is similar to Oscar-Pac. Oscar called Pac at 147. Dawson called Ward out at 168.

Pac-Cotto was similar to Whitaker-Chavez, which was also a catch-weight of 145...No one really had a problem back then. No one complained when Oscar-Hopkins fought at a catch-weight of 158 and Hopkins came in at 156 just to prove a point. Whitaker-Chavez same catch-weight as Pac-Cotto was for the lineal title, Pac-Cotto was for a paper title. Really nothing to complain about but whatever.
I was going to say this.

This is similar to the Oscar-Pacquaio situation.

If Dawson can make the weight healthily, then it's fine. But, if he can't, then just like the Oscar fight, it's worthless.

It all depends if he makes the weight healthily.

And I would be surprised if he could make the weight healthily but I guess we'll see.

                  • I don't think either fighter is really wrong (Pacquiao and Ward that is). But the situations are different (except for the Oscar fight which is the most similar). The only problem I have is that the Pacquiao vs Margarito fight was sanctioned for a title. I don't have a problem with the 150lbs CW, but there's just no way the winner should have been recognized as a Champ at 154lbs because of that fight.

I think Dawson is risking a lot by going down to 168lbs, but at the end it's his decision to do it or not. Cotto compromising at 145lbs was fine with me, and everyone else should be fine with it too. But people shouldn't go around stretching the truth as if that was Cotto's preferred option in facing Pacquiao, it was a compromise.

dawson called it for 168. ward is the champ. challenger goes where the champ is at, not the other way around. but fine you do make a point, but this is not the same thing as the pac-cotto weight, and everyone knows it.
