Comments Thread For: Amir Khan Honored To Carry The Olympic Torch in Bolton

Amir Khan has spoken of his pride at having the chance to follow in the footsteps of boxing legend Muhammad Ali by carrying the Olympic torch.

Khan will run with the torch on Thursday in his hometown of Bolton as the relay continues ahead of London 2012.

Sixteen years ago he watched Ali light the Olympic flame at the Atlanta Games, and Khan is thrilled to be involved with the torch this time around.

I don't mean to laugh but I kind of was in the same mindset. He isn't lighting the torch, just carrying but still, I'd think there would be someone more deserving. This is the Olympics, probably won't come back to England in our lifetime.

He's only carrying it through Bolton, his hometown, also how is he NOT deserving when he got a silver medal (at the age of 17 mind you) for the country he was representing.

Ali lighting the Olympic flame was one of the most moving things I have ever seen in my life...Khan jogging it through Bolton...not so much.

I know he is just carrying it, I mentioned that in my post. He might be deserving but I'd think there would be a more deserving person to do it. I obviously don't know Boltons history or its athletes but I'd think there would be a more important person than Amir Khan.

Its obviously because theres a lot of South Asians in the UK and around the world, yet they are a rarity in sport, all they have is this 1 average guy to represent all of them so they overhype him.
Look at the likes of Bronze medalist Tony Jeffries, he never got any publicity.
David Price has only recently started to get the attention he deserves. James Degale won GOLD yet he never got 10% of the fame Khan has had.
It's a joke that theyve chosen him to carry the torch, in fact Khan's whole career is one big overhyped comedy act.
ITV showing his fights on a Saturday night a few years ago has something to do with his popularity. Many Asian, British-Asian and British folk in general support him.

Frank Warren put lots of effort into Khan's star.
