Comments Thread For: Pacquiao’s Success Causing Filipino Amateurs To Go Pro

Manny Pacquiao’s success is making it hard for the Philippines to win a first Olympic boxing gold medal.

Because of Pacquio, young boys rush into professional boxing in a desperate bid to escape poverty and emulate their hero.

Manny Pinol, a former North Cotabato governor who now manages boxers, says the eight-division world champion’s fame is hindering the country’s amateur Olympic programme.

Despite a population of over 100 million and boxing’s immense popularity, the Philippines will send only one fighter to the London Olympics. [Click Here To Read More]

The Philippines has never won a Gold Medal in any event, 29 tries and 29 failures. And, the last time they won a medal for boxing was in 1996. Besides, like many small countries, the Philippines has an incentive program for those who earn a medal. Last Olympics I heard it was 15 million pesos for Gold. So there is money and opportunity to achieve success with recognition that comes with winning Gold.

Pacquiao is not the reason for the futility of the Philippines in the Olympics. Rather, the main reason is the corruption of funds which is meant for the development of athletes. Unlike Cuba, a smaller country, the Philippines never had a development system in order to be successful in Boxing. Although there is official government funds for boxers, the money never goes to them. The Amateurs have to find their own resources and rely on the generosity of others like Manny Pacquiao, who gave them Gym Space, in order to train.

The guaranteed $25 million plus television $$$ is a far cry from the amount reported on Twitter yesterday (I did not believe one word of it) saying that Manny would only receive $6 million(Plus PPV I'm certain of) and Bradley would get $5 million.

Did the Philippine olympic boxing coach just state directly that an olympic medal is harder to get than a pro ABC belt?

Oh that doesnt help paktards win their arguments on Pac's early career fighting filipino cab drivers while Money Mayweather was heroically taking on elite level competition in the Olympics.

These little dudes don't understand they won't make it to pacquiao's status unless they follow what he did. PEDs, a promoter who buys out fighters, and a trainer who focuses on weight draining.
