Comments Thread For: Abner Mares vs. Eric Morel: The Pre-Fight Report Card

By Cliff Rold - After a barn burning run that included a Yonnhy Perez, the Showtime Bantamweight tournament, and a tournament final rematch, Abner Mares gets his breather.

    Right?

Well, it’s what it looks like as he moves into a new division for a catchweight bout with a WBC 122 lb. belt on the line. Across the ring is a man who represented the U.S. at the 1996 Olympics, a teammate of Floyd Mayweather, before emerging as one of the world’s best Flyweights in the early 2000’s.

A pair of losses and a stint behind bars for sexual assault appeared to eliminate Eric Morel from the upper echelon of boxing but he’s rebuilt. Morel has won eleven in a row since 2008, including a disputed call against Gerry Penalosa, to earn what is probably his last serious shot.

He’s not believed to have a big shot to win and, given his age, looks like the sort of foe who brings a name more than a chance. Is it the case? [Click Here To Read More]

who cares about Mares Morel? Mr. Cliff, you should have spent your writing energy on Moreno-De La Mora. That's where the action is gonna be at. After all Moreno is a champion...

I think who cares describes both fights to an extent. I went with the main this week and offered a little on the other. No slight meant. I think Moreno beats both guys in the main going away right now.

I agree, cliff. Anselmo is simply one of the best fighters in the world. Unfortunately, nobody knows who he is. His fight with darchinian, where he literally sat in the pocket and never got hit (while systematically beating vic up) was a thing of beauty. I really don't think i've seen such defensive prowess, at such close distnce, in years. Probably since prime james toney. I'm sold on him.

I said this might look like Pea-Pineda...and, yup, he just savaged him to the body.

Moreno is THE truth. I had my moment of doubt prior to Vic. Full steam ahead. May, Ward and Moreno are the three most complete skills fighters on earth and Moreno doesn't have to clinch and butt like Ward.

He might be the best of the bunch. He's willing to sit in the zone, not get hit, and throw in beautiful combinations. That is the toughest thing in boxing to do and he does it better than anyone right now.
