By Jake Donovan - It’s not whether you win or lose; it’s how you play the game.

The phrase is among the most repeated – and misquoted – clichés in all of sports, but every once in a while rings oh so true.

In regards to boxing, the phrase perfectly complements the career of Erik Morales.

There was a time when the future Hall of Famer couldn’t buy a win, yet his dedicated and always grown fan base couldn’t care less. Morales had lost four straight during one stretch, at a time when his in-country rivals Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez were still regularly winning, but remained a cult hero whose action style is often the standard to which all other fighters are held.

So as the 35-year old continues to linger around, a chapter awaits. At a stage when most would serve as a steppingstone for the next generation, Morales remains a very relevant force as he prepares for his latest venture.

The latest assignment for Morales (52-7, 36KO) comes against a fighter 11 years as the reigning 140 lb. titlist defends against unbeaten Danny Garcia (22-0, 14KO) this weekend at the Reliant Center in Houston, Texas, airing live on HBO (10:00PM ET/PT).

“I’m very excited to be here and to be fighting and building towards bigger and better things,” Morales says matter-of-factly, viewing his showdown with Garcia as just another day in the office. The age difference means little to the Mexican icon, or the fact that his opponent is in the heart of his prime and has yet to learn what it’s like to lose. [Click Here To Read More]

This is going to be a tough fight for Erik Morales! I just noticed Garcia beat Kendall Holt and Nate Campbell in his last two matches.

i really doubt theres still "plenty" considering the wars he got himself into..

the trilogy with barrera alone could have taken so much mileage on him already...

then theres that trilogy with pacquiao...

add into those wars with in-jin chi, espadas, paulie ayala, famoso and mccullogh...

damn i was really in awe with his performance with maidana the last time despite those battles...

i really would love to be proven wrong again...

he is erik "el terrible" morales after all...

Well...I must say that I've always liked Morales, far more than Barrerra. brave and uncomplicated, an honest fighter. Bit I was shicked to find out that the boxer I saw against Cano was none other than Morales. I hadn't paid any attention to his return his return, and switched on after the fight had begun. I knew he reminded me of soeone, but couldn't recall any such slow, lumbering, a bit pudgy, low output fighter. Only when the winner was announced and I saw him close up as he left the ring did I realise that this was THE Erik Morales.

I could be in error because I paid little attentionto the very pedestrian fight, but the impression left with me was that it was pretty even and slow until the later rounds when Cano seemed to fold and Morales was picking his shots better.

Anyway I wish him well, and as Jake says, he's made Mexican boxing history, so I think he should retire. He may have one of those chins and heads that are immune to heavy blows, but he's taking a big chance, since we wouldn't know until years in the future.

Jake's article was as good as always, pertinent, and with interesting buildups.
