  • Comments Thread For: Rios vs. Gamboa Clash: Implosion Need Not Be Fatal

by Cliff Rold - First there was the good news.

April 14, 2012. Featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa was moving up two weight divisions to face hard charging Brandon Rios. Gamboa is one of the game’s most physically gifted athletes; Rios one of its premiere young pressure fighters. Both get hit more than is healthy. Rios gets better as fights progress and can punch all night. Gamboa can struggle after early bursts behind questionable concentration and a just as questionable chin.

Early ticket sales were brisk. Buzz was strong.

The neat thing about it was how quickly it came together. It had a hint of serendipity. This didn’t need years of trash talk or ‘slow cooking.’ A year ago, Brandon Rios was just weeks into a reign as WBA titlist at 135 lbs. and Gamboa was gearing up for Jorge Solis at 126.

When Gamboa issued a challenge to Rios, a light bulb went off. ‘Hey, yeah,’ said the faithful boxing fan. ‘Damn the scales. That fight rocks right now.’ Two fighters with superstar possibilities were putting their 0’s on the line in the sort of match capable of getting them to the next level.

    R.I.P Gamboa-Rios, March 14, 2012.

This one is heading to court, or at least eventual binding arbitration. Gamboa’s attorney has issued a statement to the affect that Gamboa’s contract with Top Rank is invalid. Top Rank has sued for breach. Fans are looking for refunds and laments of a potentially great fight evaporating are real and heartfelt. Boxing fans look forward to the red meat and were treating this one like a fine filet. [Click Here To Read More]

I have no doubt that Top Rank will win the ruling. They usually do. Gamboa is going to end up right where he is a year from now and have just wasted a year of his prime. This fight could have made him a star. If he had a problem with it he should have brought that up before fans made plans. I just don't think they had planned out a media tour and Gamboa didn't think an agreement was in place, not buying it. Those events just don't happen over night.

If Brandon's promoter doesn't get his way with Gamboa's reps. maybe they can replace Gamboa with John Molina Jr. There has been alot of talk about these two fighters facing eachother, don't know if all the rumors are true about Rios ducking Molina but I can tell you this fight would be very interesting. Most of the boxing fans in southern California have been waiting for this fight to happen, there's definitely alot of tension between these two fighters. It would be one helluva of a fight....this fight would definitely sell !!

If no contract was signed then how is Top Rank gonna win the lawsuit? I think there were some problems but TR went ahead and started the promotional tour to force Gamboa's hand. Didn't work.

stand your ground gamboa. don't be a dummy like manny pacquiao. pac should be making way more money than he does per fight. there will be a compromize and gamboa will get paid. or he'll buy his way out of the toprank dirty stealing contract.

Not the case. As numerous folks have pointed out in the press (From Reeno to Kim to Rafael), the actual pen to paper often doesn't happen until late in the game. No one was trying to force anything. This was all standard business.

good on gamboa. best decision he could make by leaving top rank. he's got a family to feed, if rios was smart the dumb fcuk he would do the same too.

As much as I dislike Top Rank's practices and its manipulation of fighters and fight promotions, I know that Bob Arum who is a lawyer by vocation is a very shrewd businessman. I don't believe for a minute that he would spend a substantial amount of money on promoting a fight without having firm legal ground to stand on. Besides the money spent, do you think Arum would put himself in a situation which would jeopardize his business relationship with HBO, the biggest TV marketing network? HBO had committed its vast resources to the fight. The Gamboa withdrawal at a point well into the fight's promotion has caused HBO embarrassment within the industry and I personally think it will have future repercussions! Hopefully, this can be resolved without it hurting Gamboa's very promising career.
