Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito Rematch: Trainers’ Takes

Kevin Cunningham (Margarito): “I think I’m going to have to go with Margarito on this. I think that both guys have lost a step or two, but Margarito’s style being relentless and constant pressure, I think he’s going to eventually track Cotto down, and I don’t know if Cotto has what it takes to keep Margarito off of him. I don’t know if he’s going to be sharp enough to totally out-box him. I’m thinking Margarito to win by late-rounds stoppage.”

it reminds me of when all the "experts" picked cotto to beat Manny but the trainers picked Cotto to beat the Pacman.

Cotto has to attack the body and clinch when necessary. He did neither in the first fight and that's why he lost. If he fails to do this tonight, he'll lose again.

Cotto won't lay on the ropes this time and let Margarito hit him with left uppercuts he will clinch like Mosley did when his back hits the ropes.Cotto will keep the fight in the middle of the ring and box use his jab throw combinations targeting that bad eye Cotto TKO 10

Cotto needs to make good use of the jab to target and swell up the eyes of Margaritto, go to the body early and often, clinch and turn flat footed Margaritto when needed. If he can't keep his back off the ropes then he will find out if he can take rito's punch plaster free. It's always easier than it sounds though and his opponent has a lot to prove and will be willing to die to prove it. I hope Cotto is ready to do the same.

                Exactly,

IMO Cotto needs to learn how to tie Margarito up and be clever on the inside. That’s very difficult for a shorter fighter to do to a taller fighter but that’s what he needs to do. Cotto has to be able to REST without taking punishment. His idea of a rest before was to scamper away backwards and lean on the ropes. Some fighters like Floyd, Pac, Marquez etc have the ability to fight a high energy fight for 12 rounds, Cotto has not shown that but who knows if he can do it this fight. He has to pace himself accordingly and not panic when he feels fatigue setting in.
A guy like Margarito feeds off of panic. Cotto must also realize that Margarito could also be feeling tired but just not showing it. Hide your discomfort at ALL times. Cotto does not hide his discomfort you can see it. To be honest when I see a fighter who can’t hide his discomfort, I always associate it with stamina problems. Fatigue can makes cowards out of brave men.
