Comments Thread For: Omar Narvaez: Quiet Storm Finally Hits The Big Time

    By Jake Donovan - “Who?”

Drop the name ‘Omar Narvaez’ to the casual boxing fan and that’s most likely response you’ll get. Don’t be surprised if even several among the sport’s hardcore base gives you a double take before they may or may not give you an informed opinion on the subject.

For all of his accomplishments as a pro and amateur, that has sadly been the story of the hard-nosed Argentinean throughout his boxing life.

He remains every bit as anonymous heading into this weekend’s showcase bout, where he has become known as merely ‘that guy who’s fighting Nonito Donaire’ at Madison Square Garden’s The Theatre (Saturday, HBO 10:30PM ET).

It doesn’t help that he hasn’t been involved in any part of the promotion for this weekend’s show, be it conference calls, press conferences or even available for the occasional quote.

The fight marks a several amount of firsts for Narvaez (35-0-2, 19KO). It’s his first fight at bantamweight, after having amassed a record of 20-0-1 in title fights at flyweight and super flyweight over the past nine years.

It’s also his first appearance on HBO, with his exposure to American boxing audiences limited mostly to showcase fights on Argentinean-based TyC network or after-the-fact YouTube viewings. [Click Here To Read More]

The Donaire vs Narvaez Fight is like a preview on what is going to expect if and when a Pacman vs Martinez is gonna happen in the future.

Its about Philippine' Best vs Argentina's Best!

Don´t understimate Omar Narvaez, is a genius of strategy in the ring.

I think than nonito understimate this guy, (is a great error)

Nonito is a beast, but Narvaez is a cerebral boxer.

Maybe Nonito will win by KO in the first 6 rounds, but it will not happend. Welcome to the Narvaez Land.

It's a difficult fight against Narvaez but fans are keeping an eye on Donaire. An old-fashion knockout will be worth seeing after all those legal foul shenanigans from mouthy slick boxers.

Narvaez is a good boxer. But calling him a genius? Come on.

He's never fought an elite fighter or even a B+ fighter in his entire life, fought only in his home country and has a zero knockout rate at superflyweight

Like Montiel, he is too slow, too small, and has even less power at bantamweight.

Hopefully he wont get seriously hurt on Saturday because he's a nice man

not to knock narvaez, because i am an admirer of his boxing ability, but he is way overmatched against donaire. as if moving up in weight isn't hard enough as it is, donaire happens to be a pretty huge bantamweight on top of that. narvaez's career to date hasn't come close to preparing him for an undertaking of this magnitude, he's out-gunned on every level. donaire by shut-out.

Narvaez is an excellent boxer but he's a natural flyweight and Donaire may be knocking out featherweights by this time next year. At this point in their careers, Donaire is younger, faster and much, much stronger and I would be shocked if this went anywhere near the distance even though I have great respect foe Narvaez' skills.

why do you guys try to degrade people that don't fight in the US? Many unknown fighters are good. Many US fighters are tomato cans but have the advantage of media exposure.
