He was named after singer Ray Charles and even called up the one and only Sugar Ray Robinson to ask if it was OK to borrow his moniker, "Sugar Ray." Ray Charles Leonard was born on May 17, 1956. When his boxing career concluded he would be best known for winning a gold medal during the 1976 Olympics and winning world titles in five different weight classes as a pro.
