NEW YORK — Leading up to the monumental matchup between super middleweight titlists Andre Ward and Carl Froch in The Final of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, SHOWTIME® has announced a bevy of programming in support of the highly anticipated Oct. 29 clash. The network will introduce a new boxing program titled Staredown: Ward vs. Froch, premiere the two latest installments of FIGHT CAMP 360°: Inside The Super Six World Boxing Classic and replay some of the storied tournament’s best bouts on SHOWTIME EXTREME®.

      Poor showtime, forever #2

They had some great momentum with the Pac fight in May and their tournaments but as long as they continue to define themselves as an HBO knockoff they are never going to be real competition.

Here's my recipe for improving Showtime boxing.

      1. Get rid of Gus Johnson - I've never heard of a boxing fan who didn't find him terribly annoying and way too verbose. It's got me begging for Steve Albert to come back. if not him bring in Barry Tompkins to call fights with Al Bernstein, that is a world class booth, up there with Lampley-Merchant. GET RID OF GUS

      2. Instead of aping HBO with 360 (24/7) and Staredown (Faceoff, and I literally laughed out loud at that). Create programming that HBO doesn't do, such as a weekly studio show covering the entire range of boxing from the small cards on basic cable, international prospects and title fights to the top tier shows on both HBO and Showtime. Here's a tip, there's no such thing as a Showtime boxing fan, every boxing fan that watches on SHO also watches HBO. Throw some investigative journalism by those announcers you're paying to only work one or two fights a month for profiles on fighters and characters, investigations of fishy situations, offbeat interest stories and promotion of the sport in general.

      3. Continue to put together tournaments and make them attractive enough to lure top competitors. The less popular weight class tournaments have been great so far. It's time to do it with others. There's plenty of medium grade talent to build stars with in single elimination tournaments.

      4. Define the brand of SHO boxing as seeking the best fights in the world. This has been a strength in the past and today but I do not like seeing them feed chumps to their stars such as Bute's run on the network.

Ken Herschman, at least think about these ideas and above all, find a boxing guy to call the fights NOT GUS JOHNSON. He doesn't know the sweet science, he is always at 100% volume and excitement which is inappropriate and takes away the drama and nuance of a fight. Get rid of him.
