  • Comments Thread For: Acting Like a Champion: Holyfield To Reprise His Role

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - And now, coming to a theater near you this winter – it's Rocky IV... again.

The story of an aging American ex-heavyweight champ who travels to, errr… Zurich, to take on an unbeaten and seemingly impenetrable new kingpin amid plaintive wails from the press that the ought-to-be-retired veteran is in for a frightful beating.

But thankfully this time, Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen are nowhere to be found.

Playing the role of the “Italian Stallion” will be former four-time title-holder Evander “Real Deal” Holyfield, who's long-since graduated from the prime-time TV dance ranks to win six of eight bouts and position himself as the world’s preeminent 48-year-old – he’ll be 49 by fight night – heavyweight.

And playing an infinitely less menacing Ivan Drago is WBA belt-keeper Alexander Povetkin.

OK, we all know the rightful WBA champion is Wladimir Klitschko after he gamely stayed awake for 12 rounds against David Haye, but for purposes of this exercise let’s pretend the Panama-based organization actually cared as much about legitimacy as profit when they labeled Wlad as “super.” [Click Here To Read More]

Say What U Will, & I Have, Holyfield Is Acting Like A Champion!

Win, lose, draw or severely knocked out, Holyfield is speaking and acting like a true Heavyweight Champion of the world should be. Old school approach. There should be ONE title holder per division, and consolidate to half the divisions; old school. When you thought of Heavyweight Champ, you thought of Ali, Louis, Holmes, Tyson. When you thought LT Hvywt Champ, you thought Michael Spinks. When you thought Middleweight Champ, you thought Marvin Hagler. Welterweight you thought Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, and so on. Boxing needs to go back to that. We don't need all these in-between weight classes, or multiple sanctioning bodies. everyone knows who the champ is, brings more prestige to being that champ AND to your Top 10 Rankings. You know who you need to beat, to move up, and earn a title shot. Boxing would be so much more exciting, so much more competitive, fighters would be less protected, and fight more frequently.

Povetkin is nothing special, only a top 5 heavyweight by today's standards. Even with eroded skills and at an advanced age, Holyfield still has a very good chance to win, if he can frustrate Povetkin and counter him effectively, he'll take his spirit. Povetkin really doesn't like being hit, but no one's been able to mount a consistent offensive attack against him for 12 rounds. Why not Holyfield?

No, Holyfield has no chance. Someone needs to rewatch the Ibragimov and Sherman Williams fights. Even against Botha, he looked like ****, even though he won.

Thank you. Holyfield is washed up completely. The Sherman Williams fight says all that you need to know. Hell, the James Toney fight in 2004 or so proved he was washed up.
