Gary Russel Jr to Face Manny Steward trained Jesus Rojas on sent 3rd

Featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr. probably will face once-beaten Jesus Rojas of Puerto Rico when he returns to the ring on the undercard of the Jan Zaveck-Andre Berto fight Sept. 3 in Biloxi, Miss., on HBO, according to Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez.

The 23-year-old Russell, of Capitol Heights, MD., rose to 17-0 (10 knockouts) with an eight-round unanimous decision over Eric Estrada on the Amir Khan-Zab Judah card July 23.

Rojas (17-1, 12 KOs) and has won four consecutive fights since losing an eight-round unanimous decision to Jose Angel Beranza in December 2008.

"This is a tough fight against a guy who has only lost one time," said Gomez. "Jesus Rojas is trained by Emanuel Steward. Tough kid. It's a step fight for Russell. The contract's going to go out today."

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer initially informed RingTV.com of the plans to bring back Russell, who is advised by Al Haymon.

"Gary Russell, I think, today is the most talked about young prospect in the sport of boxing," Schaefer said. 'He had a spectacular performance last week on the Khan-Judah card."

Well so much for this kid wanting to take on light competition. Props to him. This is a risky fight.
