Comments Thread For: Sergio Martinez Confirms: Chavez Must Face Me Next

The WBC's Diamond champion at middleweight, Sergio Martinez, confirmed an earlier story by BoxingScene.com's Miguel Rivera, who was advised by WBC president Jose Sulaiman that middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was granted permission to make a voluntary defense, but has to face Martinez in his next fight. Sulaiman also explained that Marco Antonio Rubio is not the mandatory challenger because his April fight with David Lemieux was never sanctioned as a final eliminator.

Martinez is starting to get on my nerves. Why don't you fight somebody worth fighting? What does Chavez Jr do for your career? Nothing.

Martinez told Vanes he had a chanced but not this time? It's as if Martinez can draw enough crowds. I say get it on i would like to see this happen though.

The earliest Chavez Jr would fight him I would guess is late next year so Sergio just needs to move on.

naw man, if he fought vanes, he'd get more hate than he already is getting. vanes hasn't fought at MW, just like dzinziruk, it wouldn't do that much for him. suliaman already stated chavez has to face martinez next, so that's what martinez should only focus on, fighting MWs

Are you seriously saying that having a large audience for once actually watch him fight won't do anything for his career? Having the biggest exposure of his life will do zip for his career? Chavez just had the biggest HBO ratings in years fighting a nobody. Imagine how many people would tune in with Martinez, not to the mention the people who would attend the fight in LA.

Man, I don't even think Martinez is doing it for the money. At least not doing it for however much he'll be making against Chavez. (Chavez would certainly get all the ticket money) He's doing it so he could get his own fanbase. Only way to do that is fight another big name. The same way every other fighter first gets big. Fighting Chavez would do more for his career than beating any of the Super Six guys. Maybe it won't do anything for the tiny hardcore boxing fanatic community, but it'll help him tons more with the general public where it matters.
