Comments Thread For: Matchup Aside, Pacquiao-Mosley Still A Game Changer

By Jake Donovan - The matchup has been criticized, and such seems to be the case for any Manny Pacquiao event over the past couple of years that hasn’t featured Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the other corner.

It doesn’t help matters that this weekend’s stand-in – former three-division champion Shane Mosley – is one-year removed from a lopsided loss to Mayweather himself, and not looking much better in a controversial draw with Sergio Mora four months later.

The undercard took a considerable hit midway through the promotion when Humberto Soto decided that he was no longer contractually obligated to take orders from Top Rank, thus pulling the plug on his highly anticipated rematch with Urbano Antillon.

But whatever you have to say about this weekend’s pay-per-view event between at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (Saturday, 9PM ET, Showtime PPV), it can’t be said that efforts weren’t made to reinvent the wheel.

It remains to be seen how much the show will benefit from the involvement of CBS, but at the very least it’s the only fight in more than a decade that can even ask such a question.

Ratings for its April 30 prime time edition of “Fight Camp 360 – Pacquiao-Mosley” didn’t exactly set the world afire – in fact, it came in last for its Saturday evening time slot. But it was still an idea worth exploring, and breaking new ground for the sport, as was the case when ads – as well as the premiere episode of the Fight Camp 360 series - ran throughout CBS’ extended coverage of NCAA basketball’s March Madness tournament [Click Here To Read More]

I've been coming to these forums daily for around two years now but have never posted anything, just was interested in the articles and peoples opinions on certain fights and fighters. Mostly, interested in possible fights and peoples opinions on them.

While reading you have your customary "trolls" who just chime in to start an arguement or say a fancy new degrading nickname (Margacheato, *******, etc...). You have your "know-it-all" hipsters that jump in on every little error that someone produces, so they sound smarter and more intellectual than the original poster and everyone else. You have your fans that just have seen a couple of fights of a certain boxer and think they are Gods gift to the sport. And of course, you have your lifers that are stuck in their old school ways and think that every previous boxer has greater skill than the current generation.

My point to this whole thing is there are so few people that just come here to "just" share opinions about boxing and boxers. I have noticed few, but they are absolutely the minority of this forum. I'm a Miguel Cotto fan myself. I love the guy, I love the way he boxes. And with Emanuel in the corner I love it even more. Yes, he fell apart against Margarito. And yes Pac put a hurting on him. I don't blame loaded gloves, steroids or lack of skill as the reason for defeat. He wasn't prepared to go a full 12 with Margs and fell apart (whether he was loaded on gloves, no one knows...period). He underestimated Pac's speed and power, thinking he could beat him up with his size...he was wrong, he needed a plan...he didn't have one, didn't execute, and got beat, plain and simple.

Now, with all that said....Why all the hate towards this fight? Why all the hate towards Mosley? There's mention of his last two fights against Mora and Floyd and how he looked bad. No one looks good against the awkwardness of Mora or the defense of Floyd. I agree the Mora fight wasn't a sizzling success by any means, but I don't hold that against Mosley. After Floyd was hurt, He went back to what got him to the top...defensive fighting and counter punching. There's nothing in those two fights that make me think Mosley is washed up. He is definitely getting old, but far from washed up.

Another thing I keep hearing is Mosley retired by the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc....Everyone here, including know-it-alls, a**holes, and trolls knows Mosley does not get knocked out. He just doesn't. There's no argument against that. None, zero, you can't argue with something that just has no factual merit. Yes, there is a first time for everything I guess but come on, it's just not reasonable to say.

Let's take the fight for what it is. Two great fighters. I hate that Pac beat Cotto and hope for a rematch with Emanuel in the corner but I know Pac is hot right now and there is no factual merit to refute that either. Blazing fast and powerful against blazing fast and powerful. Neither has great defense. Pac's defense is his offense. Neither wants to throw a jab ever, lol, so it will be speed and power shots thrown all over the place. It will be a fun fight to watch....either way you look at it legend against legend. So let's enjoy what should be fun to watch!

Thank you. I think that is what the sport has lost sometimes. It's great to have a favorite boxer, God knows I do, lol....but It's a sport with a lot of top flight athletes and different styles that make for good fights....I'm just getting my feet wet in these forums, lol, so I hope I contribute in some small way
