Comments Thread For: Greatness Confirmed As Donaire Starches Montiel In Two

By Jake Donovan - The talent long ago suggested that Nonito Donaire was destined for greatness. All that he needed was the big wins to match the potential.

Saturday night provided that part of the formula, in a very big way.

Making his HBO-televised debut, Donaire confirmed his pound-for-pound credentials with an explosive second round knockout of unified bantamweight titlist Fernando Montiel on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Both fighters weighed in at the bantamweight limit of 118 lb.

Donaire was dominant in the early going, providing instant justification to the surprisingly high 2 ˝-1 betting odds in his favor. Montiel tried to establish proper distance to land his right hand, but was instead rocked by a counter left hook over the top. Donaire’s precision punching also left the soon-to-be ex-champ with a nick over his eye.

Fortunately for Montiel, the cut would never become a factor.

Unfortunately for Montiel, Donaire’s punching power was a major factor.

The full effect of the Filipino’s punching power was felt late in the second. Montiel appeared to settle down and time Donaire, taking advantage of the rare moments when the Filipino would overcommit on a punch. [Click Here To Read More]

Montiel never saw the counter left hook coming!

    It was just too fast/quick!

The punches that you can't see coming is what hurt the most!

Ask Hatton, Darchinyan or Paul Williams.

Nonito Donaire is a special talent. Don't forget he started at 112, became 115 champ and now KO the best 118 in the world before tonight. The sky is the limit for him...

Donaire is a true126pounder but I wouldnt mind him beating mares or king kong then fight perez then move up to fight unbeaten wv2 which will be a hell of a fight the move to his class and fight gamboa and juanma I think he can beat gamboa due to his accurate punch and speed plus gamboa has a weak chin but I see him losing to harder punchers that are the same size or bigger in wv2 andlopez but donaire should be number 3 martinez is number 1 really p4p and manny for some reason is up there beating fighters with losing streaks in clottey cheato and now mosley donaire can be number easy he beats mares and perez he takes number 1 spot he will be bigger then manny fight the best with no catchweights and take test if needed he went after the top guy and destroyed him
