Matthew Macklin battled through the aftermath of a chest infection to register a bruising points win over Madrid's Ruben Varon at the ECHO Arena, Liverpool last night in the first defence of his EBU middleweight title. Macklin (160lb) hopes to fight consensus kingpin Sergio Martinez at some point; the Birmingham-born boxer is currently ranked at #6 by the WBO, 4th by the WBC and sixth in the latest Ring rankings yet he failed to sparkle in his maiden EBU defence.

1st of all Macklin needs not to mention Martinez ever again because he will never be good enough for that.

2nd Macklin he has looked **** in his last 3 fights and has to be honest he european level at most.

OK Macklin had a bad night. But my gut feeling is that he has reached as far as his talent will take him. Anything more would be considered over achievement. He's a top domestic and decent European level fighter, not elite or world class.

That said, his fight with Jamie Moore was an all time favorite and I would still like to see him and Barker get it on.
