  • Comments Thread For: Agbeko vs Mares Set For Bantamweight Fireworks in 2011

It wasn’t quite the barnburner their first contest was. That turned out to be to the advantage of the victor. Boxing smart and showing great determination, Ghanaian 30-year old Joseph Agbeko (28-2, 22 KO) of the Bronx, New York, scored a unanimous decision to regain the IBF Bantamweight title in his first fight losing the title to 31-year old Columbian Yonnhy Perez (20-1-1, 14 KO) of Santa Fe Springs, California in October 2009. Agbeko avenged the loss in style and, with the win, advanced to the finals of the four-man Showtime Bantamweight tournament on Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington.

This entire tournament put on by Showtime is what boxing is all about. As a fight fan, this is the type of thing that brings life back to the sport. I hope Showtime and Ken keep doing these tournaments with all this big talent. They will be giving HBO a run for their money in 2011.

Agbeko was AMAZING! I had no idea that he could box so beautifully with his arms down at his sides for nearly the whole fight. He will beat Abner Mares in the finals.

Mares vs. Vic was such a close fight. My scorecard was weird to say the least due to the point deduction and knockdowns, but I had it 113-112 for Darchinyan. I can't argue either way though because there were so many close rounds that a judge could pick what type of "work" they were looking for.

couldnt agree more with the comments about this post, all four men did there best and put on great matches. vic vs abner super close but at the end the kid pulled it off and joseph vs yonnhy awesome as well but it was all joseph. now comes 2011 the final abner vs joseph should be and will be a boxing war. may the best man win and cant wait for it to go down

hope the winner of this tournament goes off to fight the winner of Donaire vs. Montiel.
