Top Rank confirming that Rios is in line to fight Humberto Soto

A POSSIBLE HUMBERTO SOTO AND BRANDON RIOS MATCHUP
    by Charlene May

A source close to Brandon Rios told us that Rios would begin training in December in preparation to fight Humberto Soto in 2011 for his first chance to win a title in professional boxing.

Later, we spoke with a source at Top Rank confirming that Rios is in line to fight Humberto Soto (53-7-2 KO 32). However, before the deal is signed, Humberto Soto will have to retain his WBC lightweight world champion title in a victory over Urbano Antillon (28-1-0 KO 20) this weekend in Anaheim.

Humberto Soto will face Urbano Antillon on December 4, 2010, on the undercard of “In Harm’s Way”, featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Pawel Wolak. The pay-per-view card will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

For those of you that missed the news this past week during the holiday, Pawel Wolak stepped in to face Chavez, Jr. with approximately one week’s notice. He replaces the Mexican professional fighter, Alfonso Gomez. Gomez was forced to withdraw days before Thanksgiving with a torn elbow ligament.

This should be an interesting fight. Soto is facing an opponent in the December 4 bout with 34 less fights and only 2 years younger. However, Antillon is said to be stronger and the harder puncher of the two; possibly the best opponent that Soto has faced so far. Antillion has the possibility of making a statement and doing some damage to Soto with hooks to the body on the inside. If Antillon pressures Soto against the ropes, he could be in trouble. Soto may have lost some of his punching power as a lightweight, but clearly has some zing left.

Talks of Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (26-0-1, 19 KO) facing Soto originally surfaced in early October, in the event that Rios beat Noe Bolanos, December 4 in “In Harm’s Way” undercard bout on which Rios was originally scheduled.

However, on November 1, Kelly Pavlik withdrew from his tune-up fight with Brandon Vera scheduled for the November 13, Pacquiao vs. Margarito undercard. Top Rank chose Rios as a last-minute replacement to fight Omri Lowther (14-2-0), an opponent that has fought nearly half as many times as Rios, and was coming off of an August 28 loss against Canadian, Henry Lundy.

After the news that Rios would replace Pavlik was confirmed, news surfaced the same day that Rios was hoping for an impressive win in his November fight so that he could put him in line for the winner of Marquez vs. Katsidis. While Rios is an entertaining fighter that is working himself up the food chain, in my opinion, fighting Katsidis or Marquez is a little over ambitious for the young Rios, at this point.

On Rios’ Sepember 11 fight, in Las Vegas, NV, Rios gave an impressive performance against fellow undefeated contender Anthony Peterson (won 30-1 KO 20) of Washington, D.C. Rios won when Peterson was disqualified in the seventh round because of excessive low blows. Brandon Rios was leading on all three scorecards before the stoppage. Rios also won the November 13 fight against his young opponent, Omri Lowther adding another win to Rios’ record with a technical knockout, two minutes and seventeen seconds into the 5th round.

However, the question remains how would the young Rios fair in a match against Soto or Antillion? Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto is regarded as one of Mexico’s best fighters, and like Rios, is promoted by Top Rank.

Humberto Soto has been very busy the past twelve months, fighting a total of five times, including this weekend. He is a world champion in three divisions, and reigns as the current WBC lightweight world champion. Soto Humberto Soto claimed the vacant lightweight belt in March 2010 in a bout against David Diaz (35-2-1) held on the Pacquiao vs. Clottey undercard at Cowboys Stadium.

Soto has made two successful defenses of his WBC lightweight world title in 2010, once on May 15, in Mexico, against Ricardo Dominguez (31-5-2) and then again in Mexico on September 19, against Fidel Monterrosa Munoz (23-1-0).

It has been reported several times that Soto would like to move up and fight at 140 in the super lightweight division. In the event that Rios fights Soto, his fellow Top Rank fighter, in early 2011 and his victorious, Rios would become the new WBC lightweight champion and perhaps, Soto would indeed then move up in weight class.

You have the facts. Now you be the judge and make your predictions between the two fighters facing off this weekend. That being said, once your prediction is made, you can decide which fighter is best suited for Brandon Rios or if Rios is suited for either fighter.

Here's to hoping up what I'm putting down!

I think Soto is very ordinary, nothing about him really stands out to me but Rios' style might make for a good fight.

      Thanks for the info.

It doesn't surprise me since Margarito already commented that Brandon was going to kick "La Zorrita's" *ss on one of the Seckbach videos.

I think Soto will have his hands full with Antillon.... I think that fight is a very winnable fight for Antillon. Soto hasn't really impressed me at 135.

If the Soto that fought David Diaz shows up we might see a new champ.

            Soto doesn't seem very strong a 135.

Rios is a huge at 135. He gains a ridiculous amount of weight overnight.

            Could be interesting.
