I would say that his technique was poor, some say unorthodox but it worked for him mostly because of his natural ability. He stayed on top for so long mostly because he was a speed and reflex fighter not because he was a great technician.

It must have been frustrating for Toney because he is a much much better schooled boxer but there was nothing he could do against a guy with such awesome ability.

I definitely agree. There are many who can't discern between athleticism and technical skills. And as many posters have said before, Roy's technical ability showed as his athleticism began to decrease, and he was found to be lacking. That's the reason why Roy hasn't been able to win big fights later in his career in contrast to other greats and hall of famers who went on fighting past their prime.

he was a great fighter IMO and it was great to watch his athleticism in the ring

... been following boxing my whole life. No Ceilings/Burner i almost always agree with your posts. Your usually right on the money.

I hang out here and read mostly, rarely post though. After the above ^^ comment, i thought that i should ask you WTF >>> wat tha fucc are you thinking man.

..........Roy Jones didn't have skills........ you finally lost me, man, still can't believe you said that shyte. Roy Jones was the most dominant fighter after Tyson. Period. Roy had skills, accuracy, power, combinations ... and MOST of all, he came and brought the fire and made opponents look amature... he didn't run and pot shot like floyd. I am a floyd fan though... Pac too, but lets not fake the funk and act like floyd ****s, cause he don't. Burner if you think Roy Jones didn't have any skills, then you must think the same about Pacman ... cause manny and roy are cut from the same cloth bro.

Roy didn't have skills...your dreaming...and you must have never watched boxing in the 90's then.

            Peace out
Roy jones was amazing absoloutley phenominal and anyone who said he wasnt needs eye surgery

So many of you confuse skills with talent. Speed, power, and reflexes are not skills. Counterpunching, technique, defense, combination punching, those are skills. Roy Jones Jr. had skills, but he relied on his talent, which is why when they went he started getting knocked out by everyone.

Didnt feel like reading the post, but Roy wasnt a "technically sound" boxer according to some

                    Exactly.....

Its right there in the post. I said he does not have the skills to stay a dominant fighter late into his career like Floyd can because Floyd didnt only rely on reflexes.

                    Im right. Period.

Want a good example: See Bernard Hopkins.

Why is he still relevant as his speed and reflexes have dissapeared?

                    Because hes skilled as shyt.

Roy even the shot version is still trying to throw triple left hooks and leaning back all the time. He does not have the skills needed to be relevant late in age because 98% of his career he was the most athletic, freakish guy in the ring. Now thats it gone hes nothing right now. Ofcourse other factors come into play. But still.....

I said "skills to..........". I didnt just he was a bum.

He didnt have the skills to be relevant when his speed and reflexes left him. Hopkins does.
