but as far as Roy's Timing, Footwork that again has a lot to do with his athleticism, Roy could hit you with 5 punches and be out of site before you throw a punch, his athleticism was his gift

yes his decline came once he lost his legs and stamina because that was basically his advantage, while a guy like Hopkins is still effective even at a old age BECAUSE he had more boxing skills then Roy, the first fight Bernard just had no answer for Jones speed
You're making it out to be too simple, when it's more complicated than that.

Timing and footwork are skills... foot speed for the footwork and hand speed and reflexes for the timing aren't and even they have to have some form or another of skill that enhanced the talent through technique.

Jones Jr. had to have great skill to do what he did, if all he had was great athleticism, speed, and quickness Quadtrine Hill would be able to do what he does.

Roy was very skilled as a fighter. The problem is he had bad habits that were never exposed because of his tremendous athleticism. Once his reflexes went....then opponents were able to capitalize on them.

Id argue that Jones had the fundamentals also. What fundamentals didnt he show in the ring? He did everything right from what I saw. He jabbed different ways, didnt always start up top, but its not where you start its how you finish, like a Reggie Miller jump shot, didnt look good from the start, but the follow through is that counts.

Honestly man...Roy has a ridiculous amount of skills. Again I think you are seeing his bad habit and thinking that equates to him not being skilled. I say this because there is no way someone can pull off the things Roy was able to pull off and not be highly skilled. I mean you can see it in his timing, the perfect punches he threw, how he set straps and his overall ring IQ.

Now with that said, he would do a lot of things, mainly outta arrogance, such as putting his hands down, hanging his opposite hand to low when punching etc....that he was able to get away because of his cat like refelxes. Once he lost that split second or two to avoid punches.....he glass chin was finally exposed. After Tarver layed him out....Roy turned into a timid shell of his former self.

Timing and Footwork is even more impressive when you have the Speed and athleticism to use them to your advantage

but again I said he didn't have "GREAT BOXING SKILLS", I know Roy had SOME SKILLS and the Boxing Skills he DID HAVE, was enhanced by his natural athleticism, but lets not pretend like Roy's athleticism was not what made him a great fighter or gave him a huge advantage over his opponents

all I am saying is that his Superior Athleticism is what made him a great fighter

ONCE AGAIN read my first post, I never said he "HE DIDN"T HAVE SKILLS", I said he didn't have "GREAT BOXING SKILLS" and he was able to hide all of his Flaws for years because of his athleticism

It depends on what's ur definition of SKILLS. Some people say skills r the fundamental stuff that u learn in the gym. If that's the case, Roy Jones was definitely lacking in skill. Some people say skill = ability. In which case, he had nothing but skill. It's depends on what he meant.

if rjj had the skills of a floyd mayweather or even a james toney, hed have been unstoppable even up until this point.

roy was not a technically sound boxer. not having great boxing skills doesnt make u a bum ppl. dont take it so offensively. roy was defintely the most athletically gifted boxer i have ever seen fight.

I think he meant no fundamentals as other people have said in this thread...if so...Burner knows what he's talking about.
