The Russian national amateur championships is right under way in St. Petersburg, known as “The Northern Palmira”. 2010 Russian nationals started on Thursday, Sep. 16, with a grand opening while competitions themselves began one day later. Visiting the opening and the first day of the tournament was a handful of legendary Russian and Soviet veterans, including Oleg Saitov (1996 and 2000 Olympic champion), Alexander Lebzyak (2000 Olympic, 1997 world and 1998/2000 Euro champion), Vyacheslav Yanovskiy (1988 Olympic champion), Shamil Sabirov (1980 Olympic and 1979 Euro champion), Valerian Sokolov (1968 Olympic champion and 4-time Soviet champion), Ayrat Hamatov (1989/1990 world champion), Yuri Arbachakov (1989 Euro/World and WBC flyweight champion), Nikolay Valuev (two-time WBA heavyweight champion) and lots of other notable people.
