Comments Thread For: Montiel Talks About Bantamweight Super Six: No Interest

Recently, WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel spoke about his decision to turn down the possibility on entering a bantamweight tournament being put together by Showtime. The tournament was going to be based on the Showtime's Super Six Boxing Classic focusing on the super middleweight division. Some of the names willing to enter were Abner Mares, Vic Darchinyan, Joseph Agbeko and Yohnny Perez.

There is no Super Six if Nonito, Hasegawa and Montiel aren't in it.

I would love to see all those guys in the Tourney that would be my first choice, but Montiel is looking to make history by being the first Mexican fighter to win titles at 4 different weight classes. I can see where he might think that and the big paydays like a rematch with Hasegawa and Fighting Donaire could probably make him as much money or more. I think before beating Hasegawa he would definitely be willing to enter the tourney, now he feels like he's in the drivers seat and probably thinks he should be getting he lion's share of the purses.

Honestly though I wish all the top guys would just do the tourney since it's the best thing for the fans, Obviously Arum is also keeping everything in house now so the tourney never even had a chance to come together.

          Shame.

The simple solution is to start the tourney next year and make it an 8-man single elimination. They does the following:

8 man Tourney does the following:
                  1. Allows all the top BW to be envolved
                  2. Actually puts all 4 major belts in the tourney so the winner is the undisputed champ/Ring/Lineal champ

                  Single Elimination does the following:
1.Limits this to a 3 fights max for the winner so no one is tied up for a long time.
                  2. makes each fight more exciting and keeps the buzz going

They could have it start the first round in April, then 4 months later have the the second Round in August.

The 3rd and final round (championship between final two) could then be help in December or January, meaning that we get to see who is the best bantamweight on top of having the tourney done within a year.

Also staring this next year allows Montiel to get his money fight with Donaire this year, which is the real reason Montiel is hesitate to enter. Also once Montiel enters, Donaire will follow as will Hasegawa.

I just hope someone can talk to Ken Hershman because they could definitely pull it off if they went this route

                    WBC Fernando Montiel
                    WBA Anselmo Moreno
                    IBF Yonnhy Perez
                    WBO Fernando Montiel

                    115 WBA Vic Darchinyan
                    #4 P4P ranked Nonito Donaire
                    #6 Ranked Bantamweight Joseph Agbecko

These would be the guys I would include in this tourney. Winner because undisputed/Ring/Lineal Champ.

*Just an example of how this would work*

                    April (First round)
                    1. Fernando Montiel vs 8. Vic Darchinyan (WBC & WBO belts)
                    5. Yonnhy Perez vs. 6. Abner Mares (IBF belt)

                    2. Anselmo Moreno vs. 7. Joseph Agbecko (WBA Belt)
                    3. Hozumi Hasegawa vs 4. Nonito Donaire

*Hypothetically lets say these are the winners from round one*

                    August (second round)

                    1. Fernando Montiel vs. 5. Yonnhy Perez (WBC/WBO/IBF belts)
                    2. Anselmo Moreno vs. Nonito Donaire (WBA Belt)

*then the winner face off with undisputed/Ring/Lineal title on the line*

                    December/January
Yohnny Perez (WBC/WBO/IBF Champ) vs Nonito Donaire (WBA champ

I think this accomplishes several things, all while getting the Tourney done within a years time.
