Before Tito he seemed pretty tough mentally to me. I always got the sense his bravado was real and not just conjured up out of fear or trying to impress the media. With his talent and without the Tito fight who knows how far he could have gone.

Even before Tito he was hanging with the wrong crowd and getting in trouble with the law. Mentally, he's always been tough in the ring. Outside was another story. But he had such IMMENSE talent. Damn, man. Even when he fought Winky he was clearly out of shape, yet threw over 100 punches in each of the last two rounds. What a waste.

Also, to answer the question, I still think DLH would have whooped his. If you remember right, DLH was getting bullied around for the first few rounds. It's not like he was being cautious, and it was DLH's boxing ability that eventually won him that fight when he took Vargas to the middle of the ring and gave him a boxing lesson.

Vargas was so slow that fight though, man. He moved slow, reacted slow. I would've traded in the gain in strength for the reaction time.

Hard to say if he had more confidence he might have done more things, or done things differently. The fight was extremely close, he was ahead on one and behind only by two points at the start of the eleventh. I think a pre-Tito Vargas would have punked DLH. Quartey punked DLH. I think Vargas would have done the same.

Good point. Would have been nice if someone reigned him in somewhere along the lines of what D'Amato did for Tyson. With the right direction who knows how far he could have gone.

I was real torn when Vargas fought Tito - I loved both of them so much (pause). And then I saw Zab Judah sitting ringside, shouting instructions to 'Nando. I never rooted so hard for Tito in my life.

He was good but he would never be an ATG. Even if Tito didnt beat him Oscar would beat him probably 8 or 9 times out of 10. Oscar was a better boxer than trinidad and also had a better chin. Vargas wouldnt get any knock downs on oscar ever and he isnt going to outbox him. Vargas was lucky to get the win on Winky, he got it because he was HBO's new star and he was "supposed" to win.

He could have taken some more time to move him along but he still would have lost to Oscar and Mosley eventually.

His two biggest wins were Winky Wright and Ike Quartey for crying out loud. This shouldn't even be up for discussion.
