Comments Thread For: Inside the Top Ten: The Bantamweight Division

By Jake Donovan/Cliff Rold - It hasn’t been all bad at Bantamweight over the last couple decades, but as an ‘original eight’ weight class, it should have been better. Outstanding titlists like Miguel Lora, Orlando Canizales, Jeff Fenech, Johnny Tapia, Veraphol Sahaprom, Tim Austin, and Rafael Marquez have come and gone, bringing excitement and standards of excellence with them. What Bantamweight has lacked is the sort of field so talented, all at once, as to force an explosion of excellence and clash which marks a genuinely great era at 118 lbs. [Click Here To Read More]

The best division in the sport right now. Solid list.

I dont like Montiel at Number 1 though. I think it's Moreno and Cliff and Jake are spot on the Whitaker comparisions. Dude is one to watch for sure. I still cant find video of the Cermeno-Moreno fight so if you got it post it.

I dont like Perez over Mares. I thought Mares beat him soundly. It was a war but I think Mares did enough to win and Perez is damn sure not better than Hasegawa.

    My top 5 would be:

    1. Moreno
    2. Montiel
    3. Hasegawa
    4. Mares
    5. Perez

If Donaire joins this division it will really be on fire.

Soundly beat? I'm sorry but did you even watch that fight? Mares vs Perez was a close fight that was at worse 115-113 to either guy. FWIW I feel Perez will beat Montiel, and contrary to most peoples belief, Darchinyan is actually a live player at 118.

my rankings on what would happen in the ring
      1. Yhonny Perez
      2. Nonito Donaire
      3. Abner Mares
      4. Fernando Montiel
      5. Hozumi Hasagawa
      6. Anselmo Moreno
      7. Joseph Agbecko
      8. Vic Darchinyan
      9. Nehomar Cermeno
      10. Open

Left 10 spot open because Morel has to show me something in his next fight to prove himself top 10, Chris Avalos is a good prospect but needs a step up fight, and Arce is a decent fighter but I doubt his ability to be great at 118. Banal vs Munoz will be a great fight in August and the Montiel vs Concepcion fight will tell me alot about Rafael's ability to compete against the top dogs at 118.

As far as my rankings 1-7 feel it would be a scenario where one guys style will allow for him to beat another top 7 guy but will also cause him to lose to a different style. Shadows hit me up via vistor message and lets break down some fantasy fights at 118.

Talking about Perez-Mares? I wont cry robbery because it was close but Mares deserved the nod IMO. Others might see it different I think the consensus on NSB is that Mares won the fight.

I think Perez can beat Montiel too. I also think Moreno would beat him and I got Hasegawa to beat him if they fight again. Rumor has it that Montiel vs. Donaire is next up. I see rate Perez pretty high and hes a damn good fighter but I think Mares, Hasegawa, Donaire, and Moreno would all beat him.

I wish Morel vs. Arce wouldve went down. Arce doesnt have much left but hes always fun to watch and I think he was a live dog vs. the child ******er.

I never seen Chris Avalos fight. I'll check him out.

If Donaire comes to 118 he automatically belongs above Vic Darchinyan on any list.

I pretty much agree with Burner's list. However, I would put Montiel above Anselmo and Perez above Mares. Anselmo hasn't really done much, great guy, hasn't done much. Montiel is the only bantam champ to actually fight another bantam champ, so he is #1.

Hozumi drops to 3. Well, for obvious reasons. He loss to Montiel.

Perez beat Mares. Whether it is debateable or not, Mares loss. So he is lower than Perez by default. Whether we think he should have won or not, he loss, so he is lower.
