  • Comments Thread For: Harry Jeffra, Kostya Tszyu, and A Hall of a Question

By Cliff Rold - On June 13, 2010, the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) inducted one of its most intriguing classes in recent years. It was a year where many who had lingered on the ballot for years, strong in merit but sometimes overshadowed by the fog of time, could cross their fingers. Two of the three chosen in the modern category were on this scribe’s short list for preferred induction. Those two, Lloyd Marshall and Jung Koo Chang, received long overdue accolades; 70s action hero Danny Lopez got a fitting thank you for all the memorable leather he exchanged.

2011 is expected to be different, a year when crossed fingers need not bother. For some, it’s already a foregone conclusion. Barring any last minute comebacks, Mike Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Kostya Tszyu are all likely to garner induction in their first year of eligibility. [Click Here To Read More]

One person who deserves to be in the International Hall Of Fame is Wilfredo Vazquez Sr.(who got cheated out this year) Vazquez Sr. ended his career with a record of 56-9-2 & 41KO's out of that 21 were world title fights(In world title fights he was 17-4)..Vazquez won the WBA world title in three divisions(Bantam, Super Bantam & Featherweight) & out of his 21 world title fights, 20 WERE IN HIS OPPONENTS COUNTRY, STATE OR AT A NEUTRAL SITE & THE ONLY TIME HE HAD A WORLD TITLE FIGHT IN HIS HOME COUNTRY(Puerto Rico) HE LOST BY DECISION(that was in his 15th world title fight) ...

Yet Orlando Canizales who ended his career with a record of 50-5-1 & 37KO's was inducted this year & even thou he had 18 world titles fights(he was 16-1-1NC in world title fights) he was only a 1 division(Bantam) IBF world champion & IRONICALLY LOST TO VAZQUEZ(by decision in his home state, Texas) WHEN HE TRIED TO GO UP IN WEIGHT TO CHALLENGE VAZQUEZ FOR HIS SUPER BANTAM WBA WORLD TITLE!!!!!

He was also the lineal Featherweight champion, the man who Hamed beat to take that honor.

He was drained IMHO. He looked gaunt and his eyes were sunken at the weigh in.....a sure sign he struggled to get down. Also factor in age and relative inactivity through a long injury layoff (even though he looked ok in the fight before) + ref allowing Hatton to hold + hit and wrestle it was a wrap for Hatton who did a very good job that night.

          KT is a lock IMHO.

When Vazquez challenged Hamed for Hameds WBO title, Vazquez was not the lineal champion, as a matter of fact he wasn't even a champion anymore...After defending his WBA super bantam title against Genaro Rios(who Vazquez defeated), Vazquez was stripped of his title for sighning to fight Hamed next for his WBO title..I guess the WBA leeches didn't beleive in unifying titles with the WBO leeches back then & didn't even take under consideration all the years Vazquez was paying sanction fees when he defended their titles..

+1 It was difficult for Tszyu to make weight... He managed to make it from the second time and looked exhausted...

Yes, he was the lineal champion. Whether he had a belt or not is irrelevant. He was the man who beat the man etc. back to Pedroza: http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxing/feather.htm
