Comments Thread For: De La Hoya, Schaefer Interviews on Marquez-Diaz Card

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

Before we talk about the undercard, I just want to make another quick announcement. This Friday, July 2 there is going to be a special edition of Sólo Boxeo Tecate on Telefutura, which is going to go inside Marquez vs. Diaz II. It's going to be a 90-minute special, a deep look into the first fight and an analysis by some very well-known fighters, such as Israel Vasquez and others are going to be talking about the first fight. Marquez and Diaz are going to be on talking about that first fight and what kind of adjustments they have to make for the second fight and they're going to be showing never before seen camp footage, how these two guys are preparing. So, in a way, it's almost like a 24/7 put into one 90-minute show and that's going to be a special this coming Friday, July 2, which is going to be on Telefutura. So, please make sure you watch out for that. [Click Here To Read More]

    Part 1: THE MAIN EVENT

What a load of crap. Two guys coming off L's that have been looking suspect as of late. JMM got slapped around by Floyd and hasn't fought in 11 months (do I need to remind people of his age and ring mileage)? Plus he's too big, the guy's best weight is 130. Now we have Juan "Baby Fat" Diaz. Dude has officially lost 3 of 5 and it could be argued that he lost 4 of 5, AND already got KO'd by his opponent in 9. This fight got a gift as fight of the year last year when there were at least 2 better fights. Juan has not looked good as of late so I'm not buying that this is an HBO PPV worthy fight- much less HBO Championship boxing. I know JMM deserved more $ earlier in his career that his horrible manager lost him, but now you're just gouging.

    PART 2: THE UNDERCARD

Here are some quotes by Golden Boy:

"“We promised to put together an undercard that was made up of fights that could stand alone as an HBO-televised fight. That was a commitment we made to fight fans,"- Richard "the ass" Chaefer (oops) (let's see)

“It’s key in not only keeping the existing fans we have but in attracting new fans, We didn’t care how much money we had to spend (on the July 31 card), we just wanted to put on good fights for this pay-per-view show.”- Oscar DeLa Hogmaw (see the below fights to see how many fans will be attracted by BUYING a PPV)

“We don’t want this to be a stand alone event. We want to start a trend. We want this to be the norm, the first of many steps in the right direction.” - Richard "the ass" Chaefer (please see their last 2 undercards, for floyd/shane and for bhop/roy- VERY Arumesque)

Even bigger smokescreen than the main event. *** these promoters. Let's start with Guerrero-Casamayor. Guerrero hasn't lost in 12 fight and is a stand up kid. Good fighter, entering his prime, took a dive vs Yourdan, looked great against Klaussen. Good fighter, definite lw contender. Casamayor- OLD lion, fought last in NOvember against Jason Davis, before that got KO'd by JMM. Decent crossroads match likely to be boring. NOT AN HBO WORTHY FIGHT, average undercard fight.

Linares-Juarez- ***n Rocky Juarez again?????????? Again!!!!!!!!!!! Dude is a nice guy and all, but lets be real, this guy gets more breaks that Malignaggi/Mora combined and is just being donated $ his whole ***n career. Don't even boxrec this guy, looks like a whole gang of stop signs. Plus he's soooooooooooo boring every fight, never changes his style, never ever changes anything. Linares, Linares, Linares, the Venezualean Amir Khan without the size. No chin but all kinds of boxing ability. The draw vs Lorenzo is SCARY but he should clinic Juarez. This is a name fight only and total garbage.

Now finally we have 2 PROSPECTS fighting for Sergio Martinez's belt. What a joke. Since when does beating Ishe Smite and Mike Walker qualify you to fight for Sergio's belt? Jacobs is a solid prospect, but lets be honest, he's a prospect. Pirog is another prospect, straight forward pressure guy from Russia that beat Jantuah. Good for him, another prospect. This fight has ShoBox written all over it. I like the style matchup with the boxer puncher V pressure fighter but its not making me want to buy the PPV at all. These guys are top 15 MW's at best. This is probably the best fight of the night.

Is that an HBO card worthy undercard? How about an HBO PPV worthy fight?

I hope they lose their ass like they did on Bhop- Roy.

yes, I'm satisfied with Showtime's next two doubleheaders.

I think this is a garbage card for an HBO PPV.

Juan Diaz got his ass kicked by Paulie Malignaggi who got his ass kicked by both Ricky Hatton AND Amir Khan. JMM is fat and drinks his own piss. They can **** off.

I will however watch it on stream just in case.

I will be shocked if they even make their 4 million $ back, most people in the u.s would barley watch it if it was on hbo after dark for 11.95 a month, i realize people are so ignorant they don't wanna listen but why not have a boxing on demand, charge say 20$ a month and for a fight like this you could make more money, whatever if you don't wanna hear it **** head why listen then

I think this is the litmus test for boxing to see if they can kind of in a way do what the UFC has been doing. Can Boxing give it's fan a somewhat so so main event and still get decent views by having the undercard as one of it's main focal points? Or is it still just about the main event? I for one am excited that I will be getting 4 decent fights and it is the reason I will be purchasing. Had this been a poor undercard or only okay I wouldn't of even thought about it buying.

While it is a great night of boxing, i think that many will pass on the fact that its on PPV. Sure this card has the making for a memorable night, but not at the expense of 50+ bucks. Boxing has become like MMA. They keep shoving PPV's down your throat putting events on PPV that have no business being on PPV.
