  • Comments Thread For: Dmitry Pirog Talks American Debut, Daniel Jacobs, More

While big men of boxing are preparing for future challenges (no fights are presently solidified for Alexander Povetkin, Nikolay Valuev and Denis Boytsov), and cruiserweights Denis Lebedev and and Alexander Alexeev are getting ready to collide in all-Russian encounter in Germany, one can hardly find a bigger figure on the domestic boxing scene than 29-year old middleweight Dmitry Pirog of Gelendzhik, Russia.

Dmitry Pirog is making a mistake by not coming over to Vegas soon enough to adjust to the 11 hour time zone change. Ten days is not enough, he should give himself three weeks.

He should be training in Vegas during July, not in Russia.

I have seen only a little of this guy Pirog but Jacobs could be in for a tough fight here. IDK if GBP is underestimating Pirog or are throwing Danny in the deeper waters to seeing if the kid is going to sink or swim.

"I tried to make my way to 2004 olympics both for Russia and Georgia..." from the interview.

I don't understand, is Dmitry Pirog part Georgian?

I don't know but perhaps he was born in the North Ossetian region and would therefor have citizenship for both countries, didn't make Russia and still wanted to go so tried out for Georgia? Or something of that kind. Perhaps he's half Ossetian or is Ethnic Russian but was just born in Ossetia.

No, he's not. He was born in Temryuk, Krasnodar region, to Russian parents. Competing for a rival amateur team has nothing to do with your ethnicity. For example, Buryat Bato-Munko Vankeev competes for Belarus (after years competing for Russia), and Denis Makarov is a Euro featherweight champion for Germany.

And Lennox Lewis, who was born and raised in England, competed for Canada in the 1988 Olympics.

I'm interested in seeing how Pirog and Kotelnik fare against America's next big stars ( Jacobs and Devon).
